Each Way

No. 7 Gai’s Artist

J: Tyler Schiller (57.5kg) T: G Ryan & S Alexiou

Gai’s Artist has each-way claims in an open race.

The filly by Snitzel weakened up on the speed fresh at Canterbury over 1200m, struggling to match the stride of the much fitter Seascape and Maori Chief over the final furlong.

She should be much better for the effort and there was a good gap back to the rest of the field that day.

Drawn well and likely to push forward again from the soft gate, she rates highly in a race that packs early speed.

No. 3 Agita

J: Jason Collett (58.5kg) T: David Payne

Agita is competing in the blinkers for the first time.

The David Payne-trained gelding has been working up nicely to this distance range, landing midfield in three attempts over much shorter at Warwick Farm, Rosehill, and Kensington.

The son of Adelaide hasn’t won in just over a year now, but he did handle his own in the Queensland Derby earlier in the winter, battling home late to finish a long way back in fifth.

Drawn well with Jason Collett experienced in the saddle, the pair should give this a good shake in the late stages.

No. 3 Watch My Girl

J: Jason Collett (58kg) T: R J Quinton

Watch My Girl just needs luck from out wide to be a factor second-up.

This grey mare by Japanese Group 1 winner Maurice was outstanding first-up a couple of weeks earlier, plugging away just off the seed to draw clear down the outside and win by 2.5 lengths.

We saw her handle the mile nicely on a couple of occasions last time in work, notably winning at Hawkesbury where she made every post a winner in a Class 1, before finishing midfield up to Saturday grade over the same trip at Randwick.

Providing she doesn’t spend too much trouble shuffling across to find the front, she’ll be one of the hardest to run down.

No. 8 Extremely Hardys

J: Tim Clark (56kg) T: Chris Waller

Extremely Hardys is a little on the short side, but she does look the obvious pick if she can produce the same late speed she showed on debut in July.

The filly by Extreme Choice led from barrier box to score by a comfortable six lengths on a very wet day, so she’s sure to have her share of admirers back from a break.

How she handles a dry deck from a wide gate are two genuine querys, but in a race that doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence, I’m happy to be in her corner.
