2024 Surf To Turf Day Tips & Preview

Ten races will be run and won at Royal Randwick this Saturday with their Surf To Turf Day race meeting officially marking the start of the 2024 Sydney Everest Carnival.

The $1m 7+ Stakes will headline the premiere raceday along with the Group 2 The Shorts, which is a vital lead up event to the $20m Everest, to run on October 19th.

Twelve runners will line up in this year’s edition and as time of publish, none of them have yet to be locked in for the premier sprint.

Three other black type events will be contested on the day ensuring a brilliant day of racing and we’ve provided out best bets below.

The rail will be in the true position and the track is currently rated a soft 5.

Best of the day

Race 1: (11:50pm) VALE GRAHAM MCNEICE MIDWAY HANDICAP BM (1600M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 11 El Castello

J: Tim Clark (54.5kg) T: Anthony Cummings

El Castello comes off a gutsy first up victory under 61.5kgs.

A son of Castelvecchio, the colt travelled three wide facing the breeze over the 1400m at Warwick Farm and dug deep to hold out the challengers and salute.

Only lightly raced, he was placed on debut before finishing second over the mile behind subsequent Group One J.J. Atkins winner Broadsiding.

Sent to the paddock after his third raceday appearance where he failed to fire in the heavy conditions, he certainly looks to have returned in top order.

He drops 7kgs on his latest run and is set receive all the favours from gate 2 under Tim Clark.

Race 2: (12:25pm) TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP CLASS 3 (1000M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Perennial

J: Zac Lloyd (60kg) T: Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich

Perennial returns to the races.

Prepared at Scone by Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich, the Mikki Isle gelding made a flying start to his career saluting at his first three outings in the country before heading to town, where he was only narrowly beaten over this course and distance.

Given a short freshen up he was then given two more runs and was solid on both occasions despite not having the best of luck.

He comes here off a pleasing 900m trial and gets a crossover noseband on, which should help him to relax in the run.

Zac Lloyd goes onboard and from the low draw he’s sure to afford him every chance.

Race 3: (1:00pm) PEACHESTER LODGE SHOOT OUT MILE (1600M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Bear On The Loose

J: Nash Rawiller (57.5kg) T: G Waterhouse & A Bott

Bear On The Loose kicks off his Spring campaign.

Only lightly raced, the European import has put together a very tidy record and was quick to make an impression down under, as he saluted an his first start on Australian soil.

He didn’t have the kindest of runs at his following start and just appeared a bit flat over the final part and was subsequently sent to the paddock.

He lines up here off two solid trials and as he showed last time, he can be very effective first up.

Nash Rawiller partnered the gelding in both runs last prep as well as his two trials and from barrier two he can make his own luck up on speed.

Race 4: (1:35pm) NICK MORAITIS TROPHY BM78 (1400M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 14 Pure Alpha

J: Kerrin McEvoy (57.5kg) T: Chris Waller

Pure Alpha returns to the races.

The four year old son of Ardrosson has shown plenty of promise having finished in the top two in five of six starts and I think he’ll continue to work through the grades.

Sent for a break after just appearing to have had enough at his fourth run in last prep, he comes here off the one public barrier trial and the 1400m kick off looks ideal.

Whist he only beat one runner home in the heat, he was kept under a tight hold and was really charging through the line late.

Kerrin McEvoy takes the mount for Chris Waller and with luck in running, he’ll be right in this.

Race 5: (2:10pm) JAMES SQUIRE KINGSTON TOWN STAKES GROUP 3 (2000M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Eliyass

J: Tim Clark (56kg) T: G Waterhouse & A Bott

Eliyass has made it two wins from two starts since his arrival in Australia and his overall record is hard to go past looking at the Kingston Town Stakes field.

A son of Le Havre, the former French galloper has recorded eight wins from his ten raceday appearances and there looks to be plenty more in store.

Kicking off over this course and distance back in June, he travelled beautifully throughout and was dominant over the final stages, pulling away to score by just under two lengths and it was a similar story last start when he proved superior in the Group Three Premier Cup.

Tim Clark will again do the steering for the Waterhouse / Bott team and with the added fitness and the advantage of the inside draw, he’ll be hard to beat.

No. 6 (2:45pm) BILL RITCHIE HANDICAP GROUP 3 (1400M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 4 Tom Kitten

J: James McDonald (57kg) T: James Cummings

Tom Kitten made a very strong impression on his return as a gelding, with a decisive victory over 1400m at Rosehill last month.

The Group One winning son of Harry Angel has always displayed above average ability but I feel the ultimate gear change will see him take it to a new level this Spring starting in Saturday’s Bill Ritchie Handicap.

With a month since that first up outing, he’s been given a 1030m trial to keep him up to the mark and he does race particularly well here at Randwick.

He does have to overcome the wide draw but James McDonald sticks with him and if he can find cover early, he’ll be powering over the top of them late.

Race 7: (3:20pm) DARLEY TEA ROSE STAKES (1400M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 6 Autumn Glow

J: James McDonald (56kg) T: Chris Waller

Autumn Glow remains unbeaten after two runs and looks to be the real deal.

A daughter of The Autumn Sun, she’d trialled well prior to her debut and stepping out over 1300m at Rosehill, proved too good, beating home a handy field including subsequent stakes winner Dawn Service.

Straight to Group Three level last time and she was equally as impressive, clearing out over the final part to take out the Up And Coming Stakes.

The slight rise to 1400m looks ideal and whilst she does have to carry equal weight to her more experienced counterparts, I think she’ll prove too classy in the Tea Rose Stakes.

Race 8: (3:55pm) 7+ SPORT STAKES (1600M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win Market Mover

No. 6 Fangirl

J: James McDonald (57kg) T: Chris Waller

Fangirl wasn’t disgraced when resuming behind stablemates Via Sistina and Zougotcha in the Winx Stakes and the Chris Waller trained mare strips fitter here.

After settling back in the field she picked up strongly down the outside to run in to third but just couldn’t reel them in.

She was given a 1000m trial early last week to really bring her on and is sure to relish the rise to the mile.

James McDonald stays in the saddle and she gets in beautifully under the set weights conditions.

Race 9: (4:35pm) YARRAMAN PARK SHORTS GROUP 2 (1100M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. Private Eye

J: Jay Ford (57kg) T: Joseph Pride

Private Eye returned in top order with a very encouraging performance in the Concorde and he’ll relish the rise in trip.

Placed in the last two editions of the Everest, the Joe Pride trained galloper has well and truly proven himself at the top level and was victorious in this race last year.

A winner of two from three over this course and distance and he does race particularly well second up so there’s a lot to like about him.

The wide gate is a slight concern but he can find cover early, he’ll be charging home late.

Race 10: (5:15pm) THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP BM88 (1200M)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 7 Raikoke

J: Chad Schofield (57.5kg) T: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr

Raikoke failed to fire when making his return at Moonee Valley but the gelding was found to be lame upon a post race vet examination so I’m winning to forgive.

The son of Written Tycoon made a flying start to his career, recording a dominant win on the Sandown Lakeside before stepping straight into black type level, where he proved superior in the Group Three Zeditave Stakes.

At his third race start he contested the $1m Inglis Sprint, where he produced a very nice effort to finish fifth, behind some highly talented gallopers.

The four year old produced two very impressive jump out performances before his first up run and can bounce back here under Chad Schofield, who takes the mount for the Price and Kent team.
