Best of the day

No. 1 I See You Coming

J: Angela Jones (60.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

I See You Coming is having his second run back for Tony Gollan after another eye-catching effort fresh at Ipswich on Cup Day.

By Tycoon Ruler, this smart five-year-old probably would have won if he timed his run a fraction earlier, beaten right on the line by Atmosphere after shifting out from the fence at the 200m mark.

Off that, the rise to 1200m presents no issue, while we’ve seen him handle wet tracks quite well in the past.

Has big scope for improvement and strikes a winnable race despite carrying a little extra weight now.

Doomben: Race 8 (4:08pm)

Win

No. 15 Madame Odette

J: Damien Thornton (54.5kg) T: Tony Gollan

Madame Odette has the wide gate to overcome, but on recent efforts she still looks difficult to beat.

Tony Gollan’s mare was last seen racing at Ipswich three weeks ago over a similar journey, bolting in late from the tail of the field to finish second behind Cocobrew Express.

The bigger track suits and she has scored twice third-up in the past.

Would probably like it a little more on the dry side, but down in the weights with Damien Thornton steering, she appeals.

Caulfield: Race 8 (4:15pm)

No. 5 Mrs Chrissie

J: Ethan Brown (56.5kg) T: Ciaron Maher

Mrs Chrissie has major claims in the Sir John Monash Stakes.

Ciaron Maher’s might not be tested at Group 1 level like the two favourites, but her recent form includes two wins from her last four starts since resuming. Her effort three weeks ago over the track and distance was full of merit, shifting to the outside at the top of the straight where she flew home to run a place.

Proven on a soft track and rock-hard fit, she’s a serious danger to the two favourites.

Caulfield: Race 9 (4:48pm)

Win

No. 8 St Lawrence

St Lawrence presents fitter for three runs back with big improvement still to come.

His runner-up effort a fortnight ago over the track and distance was eye-catching, splitting a pair of runners over the final furlong before finding Redwood a touch too good over his final strides.

He was competing off a four-week break that day, so on less of a turnaround with conditions to suit, his best should see him hard to beat.
