Unfortunately, inclement weather saw last Saturday’s Caloundra Cup Day meeting end after just four races.
With the Listed Caloundra Cup, Group 3 Winx Guineas and the Listed Glasshouse Handicap still to be run, we return to the Sunshine Coast on Sunday for an eight-race program.
While the track is rated a Heavy 10 on Friday, fine weather is forecast so we should see some minor improvement by the opening contest.
We’ve run the rule over each race and provided our selections below.
Vorkuta is on debut for Tony and Maddy Sears following a trial win at Doomben over 840m.
The son of Under The Louvre sat three deep the trip but was still too strong in the run home to win narrowly.
He drew wide in the trial but from a low draw here, Kyle Wilson-Taylor can settle a lot closer.
Termagent returned in terrific order last start over this course and distance.
The O’Dea and Hoysted-trained Deep Field filly settled back from a wide gate before rounding them up easily and cruising to a neck victory.
She’ll strip fitter and won her only previous second-up race which was a five-length demolition job over this course and distance.
With just 52kg on her back, she should prove hard to hold out.
Luvarchie worked forward from an outside barrier to lead over this course and distance first-up and it was only condition that gave out late that cost him the win.
The Billy Healey-trained gelding has since been back to the trials which saw him turn in a nice piece of work to win.
He’ll strip fitter second-up and won his only previous heavy track race which was over this track and trip last preparation.
Cejay Graham can drive forward and take up a prominent position.
Enterprise Lassie found 2200m a stretch beyond her capabilities last start at Eagle Farm and will appreciate dropping back to this distance.
The Stu Kendrick-trained daughter of Spill The Beans won three starts back over 2000m on the Poly Track here before an impressive performance over this course and distance where she led all the way to brain her rivals by 3.8 lengths.
Cody Collis, who claims 1.5kg, is back in the saddle and has built a good bond with the mare.
She’s drawn wide but she has the early speed to cross and find a prominent position against this field.
Hezashocka will appreciate dropping back to a Handicap after finishing down the track in the weight for age Group 2 The Q22 last start.
Two starts back the Price and Kent Jnr-trained son of Shocking held on to win the Group 3 Premier’s Cup over this distance at Eagle Farm. There were six lengths back to third.
He races extremely well on heavy tracks having won two and placed third twice in four races.
One of those heavy track wins came just four starts ago in the Listed Gosford Gold Cup.
Know Thyself could very well be undefeated after four races if not for an unlucky second two starts back at Canterbury.
The Autumn Sun gelding bounced back in a big way last start over 1400m on a heavy Randwick where he let down powerfully to win by 5.3 lengths.
That run indicated he’ll love a mile as does his breeding.
He’ll strip fitter third-up and Aaron Bullock, who has ridden him in all three of his wins, can settle in a prominent position.
Murwillumbah trainer Daniel Bowen has At Witz End running through brick walls this preparation.
Besides ‘trainer error’ resulting in a disappointing performance in the Group 2 Moreton Cup, the rising nine-year-old has been in the form of his life with four wins from his past seven starts.
That includes last start when storming home to win the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich and four starts ago when loving the wet conditions here in the Listed ATC Cup.
There doesn’t look to be a great deal of speed in the race which should allow Sam Collett to roll forward and find a nice position.
Golden Boom has come back this preparation in great form.
The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old gelding overcame the outside gate at Doomben first-up when winning the Listed Chief De Beers by half a length.
He then ran well last start when running on strongly for second behind Steady Ready in the Listed Lightning Handicap at Eagle Farm.
He’ll strip fitter third-up and has a good record over this course and distance.
Angela Jones can settle just behind the leaders before presenting in the straight.
