2024 The Coast Day Tips & Preview

Due to the weather and state of the track, Saturday’s 10-race meeting at Gosford has been moved to Newcastle Racecourse.

The Gosford Gold Cup and the $500,000 The Coast race are the two features on the program, and you can find our thoughts, analysis, and best bets by checking out our 2024 The Coast Day Preview below.

Race 1 - 11:15AM GOSFORD IT 2YO HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
No. 7 Point And Shoot

Point And Shoot finished off nicely from a long way back on debut at Rosehill two weeks ago over slightly shorter.

Bjorn Baker’s colt was taken back to near last under Sam Clippeton, shifting to the outside at the top of the straight where he let down nicely to run a length third behind Ikasara.

Like others, a heavy track might test him but if Clipperton settles closer to the speed from the low gate, they should prove tough to hold out.

Race 2 - 11:50AM MIDWAY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
No. 8 Eye Pea Oh

Tough race, but one Eye Pea Oh could measure up in if she gets luck in running from the wide gate.

The Capitalist mare has looked in need of the run in both starts since resuming, running home late to finish fourth at Rosehill a couple of weeks ago where she made contact with another runner early on.

She’s hard fit now third-up and perhaps most importantly, has some wet track form on her resume.

Tyler Schiller steers for the first time carrying 56.5kg and the slight rise to 1200m does look ideal now.

Race 3 - 12:25PM TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
No. 6 Tanglewood

Tanglewood has gone up the favourite after coming off second-best to the in-form Martini Mumma in his first run back at Rosehill two weeks ago.

Todd Howlett’s gelding was having his first start in close to 10 months, sticking to the task nicely down the centre of the straight where he was beaten just over a length over 1100m.

His second-up record reads well and Josh Parr looks likely to adopt similar tactics off the speed from an identical gate. Rates a likely improver with solid trial form suggesting he can go one better.

Race 4 - 1:00PM TOOHEYS NEW BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP (2200 METRES)
No. 5 Fay’s Angels

Fay’s Angels has likable wet track form heading into her third start over the 2100m trip.

Karen Owen trains this honest mare out of Group 1 winner Anacheeva, the four-year-old last seen winning on the Kensington track a fortnight ago where she let rip with a huge turn of foot down the outside to reel in the leader with plenty left to give.

She’s deep into her prep, but with form around the likes of Wymark, she should measure up carrying just the 56kg under Reece Jones.

Race 5 - 1:35PM SIGNARAMA ERINA / GOSFORD 3&4YO BENCHMARK 72 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)
No. 9 Scarlet Oak

Scarlet Oak looks ready to win now in her second Australian start.

Chris Waller’s Kiwi import plugged away in similar heavy conditions at Randwick a few weeks ago in a Group 3, finishing a clear second to Konasana over 1400m.

By Kermadec, she’s bred to handle wet conditions, while her final 200m last start suggests she’ll see out the mile now with some fitness on her side.

Drawn a low gate and likely to get right back again under Zac Lloyd, she rates highly.

Race 6 - 2:10PM *BIG DANCE ELIGIBILITY* BUTERIN L'ESTRANGE GOSFORD GOLD CUP (2200 METRES)
No. 9 Hezashocka

Competitive race here with a few of the top chances coming out of the Group 3 JRA Plate a few weeks ago at Randwick.

Hezashocka hasn’t won in close to two years but was seen poking through late between a pair of runners to finish a distant third to Huetor.

The son of Shocking clocked the fastest final 200m behind the winner and will appreciate another genuinely wet track with only an extra kilogram in hte saddle under Chad Schofield.

Race 7 - 2:45PM DE BORTOLI WINES TAKEOVER TARGET STAKES (1200 METRES)
No. 14 Wategos

Wategos presents fitter second-up ahead of his first start at Stakes level for Bjorn Baker.

The experienced five-year-old gave a nice sight fresh at Rosehill two weeks ago where he was seen doing his best work late, charging down the middle of the straight to run fifth behind hard To Say in a BM94.

Two of his seven wins have come second-up from a spell, while he’s also got some nice wet track form alongside.

By Capitalist, if he can find cover early from the wide gate and make use of the light weight, another strong finish could be on the cards.

Race 8 - 3:20PM THE COAST (1600 METRES)
No. 3 Iknowastar

A potential heavy track might go against him, but Iknowastar does look well-placed third-up out to the mile.

Bjorn Baker’s four-year-old by Star Witness is super consistent, running a place in his last two starts at Rosehill over shorter trips.

He loomed the winner two weeks ago before being run down by a smart horse in Waterford, the tactics possibly against him after racing up on the speed and tiring late.

Rachel King takes over the reins now, and with five wins from six starts to this boy’s name over the mile, she should feel good about her chances.

Race 9 - 4:00PM TRIPLE M THUNDER THOUSAND BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP (900 METRES)
No. 5 Passeggiata

Big watch on the Bjorn Baker-trained Passeggiata on return off a lengthy break.

Only lightly-raced for a four-year-old, this smart Winning Rupert mare hasn’t been seen since the middle of the last year where she won well first-up at Randwick over the 1000m trip in June.

Her work at the trials leading in has been nothing short of superb, smoking the line along the inside to win in her final stride, before leading alll the way to gap the field by 10 lengths in her latest hit-out at Rosehill.

Unbeaten first-up with a win on heavy going, she’s an easy on-top selection.

Race 10 - 4:40PM RAILWAY HOTEL BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)
No. 6 Cruel Summer

Cruel Summer should appreciate a genuine tempo, especially if Rachel King can somehow get back in the run and save something for late.

Paul Perry’s five-year-old has had his runs spaced over the last two months, winning well at Rosehill two back over 1300m before leading out of the turn at Randwick three weeks ago where he was run down by Putt For Dough.

He tried his guts out up on the speed that day, but does look suited right back to 1200m with King proven in the saddle. Down in the weights, the pair are a live chance in an open contest.
