2024 NRL Round 5 SGM Preview

2024 NRL Round 5 SGM Preview

The Phins are all the way up for the first time in competition history, what a time to be alive.

Round 5 gets underway this weekend and hopefully now that we have a months worth of data on teams, we might be able to do a bit better in our SGMs because it’s been rocks or diamonds for us at the moment and that is not good enough!

I take full responsibility, it’s only fair if I’m going to take all the praise for the winners too.

Let’s dive into Round 5 hey?

Here is a same game multi for each day of the footy this weekend.

Also, listen to our poddy ya dogs.

MELBOURNE STORM v BRISBANE BRONCOS
Check it out below

The Broncs head on down to Melbourne on Thursday night and even though they tore strips off the Cowboys last week, I am a little bit worried.

The Storm are coming off the bye, they get Hughes, Welch and Munster back and JUST TO TOP IT ALL OFF – the Broncs haven’t won in Melbourne since 2016.

Sure, they will win down there eventually.

All streaks are made to be broken but for me, in this game, I will be staying away from a result market in my multi.

A unit or two on the Broncs head to head on it’s own looks like an interesting play but we’re here for multis!

The Melbourne Storm so far this season have scored 50% of their tries on the left edge, this has me leaning towards Xavier Coates at $2.02.

That is pretty decent value for the high flyer to score on his old team.

Tristan Sailor is my pick for a Broncos try, he was electric out the back against the Cowboys and I think he’s had another week at training with the #1 jersey on, $4.50 for him to score looks insane.

Storm v Broncs: $9.10

  • Xavier Coates Anytime Try Scorer @ $2.02
  • Tristan Sailor Anytime Try Scorer @ $4.50
NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS v ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS

Gee what a blockbuster Friday night footy clash we have this week (Please note the loads of sarcasm).

Newy are incredibly short priced favourites but I think St George should really give them a run for their money here.

This is the time of the year to back the Dragons, they seem to start out of the gates strong(ish) each season, giving their fans some hope before inevitably running out of gas around State of Origin time.

For me, I like St George to cover.

This one could be another upset but for multi sake, give me a 7.5 point handicap.

Ravalawa is the obvious ATS try scorer pick if we like a St George win and at $2.40 he earns a spot in my SGM.

We’re currently sitting at $3.54, adding Kalyn Ponga as a try scorer bumps us up to $10.21 and while that looks really enticing.

I think I’m going to stick to two legs here, watch me regret this majorly.

Newy v Drags SGM $3.54

  • Dragons +7.5 @ $1.90
  • Mikaele Ravalawa Anytime Try Scorer @ $2.40
MANLY SEA EAGLES v PENRITH PANTHERS

I’m kicking myself I didn’t get the Panthers at $2.50 last week so I will have to settle for $1.60 for them this week against the Sea Eagles.

Manly went and lost to the Dragons last week thanks to a heap of unforced errors, there is no chance in hell that Penrith would let that go unpunished if they put the same performance on this week.

The Riff are still Clearyless but I told you all that wasn’t a problem, I think it should be even less of a problem against this Manly side.

Give me Penrith H2H.

Manly concede 53% of tries on their left hand side (Penrith’s right).

Given that Turuva has been a money maker for us, let’s go back to the well, he’s $2.20 as an ATS.

Manly need to put Turbo in positions to succeed and they haven’t quite done that so far this season, let’s have a crack on them getting that right this week. Give me Turbo at $2.45.

MANLY v PENNY SGM $8.19

  • Penrith Panthers Head to Head @ $1.65
  • Sunia Turuva Anytime Try Scorer @ $2.20
  • Tom Trbojevic Anytime Try Scorer @ $2.45
NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS V GOLD COAST TITANS

Things are about to go from bad to worse for the Titans here and Cowboys 13+ is definitely the first leg of this multi, it’s not a massive price but we’re going to get things started at $1.60.

My close personal friend Oscar Pannifex from Rugby League Writers and the Neds NRL Unpopular Opinions Podcast (that you can listen to here) highlighted on the show this week that the Cowboys left edge should have a pretty good day out against this struggling Titans outfit.

Murray Taulagi is a must add to this multi for me, he earns a spot at $1.94.

Then it’s dealers choice from Val Holmes ($2.35), Tom Dearden ($2.70) and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki ($2.75).

Take your pick their punters but for me – I’ll be taking Val.

Cows v Tits SGM $5.33

  • Cowboys 13+ @ $1.65
  • Murray Taulagi Anytime Tryscorer @ $1.94
  • Valentine Holmes Anytime Tryscorer @ $2.35
