2024 Sunshine Coast Cup Day Tips & Preview

2024 Sunshine Coast Cup Day Tips & Preview

Feature racing continues in the Sunshine State on Saturday with the running of the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup over 1400m.

There are winners to be found right across the 10-race program, and we’ve analysed every race below.

Coastline BMW 1 QTIS 3YO Handicap (1600m) - 12:13pm AEDT
No. 2 Ringer’s Reward

Ringer’s Reward was second to unbeaten filly Fortuneer last week at Eagle Farm, form that obviously stacks up nicely here against this small field.

Kevin Kemp’s three-year-old really hasn’t put a foot wrong this time in work, running on nicely into the money two back in a Group 3 at Doomben where she finished a length off Cifrado.

Returning to the Sunny Coast is huge for her chances, alongside the fact Queensland’s second-leading jockey Ben Thompson is engaged.

Coastline BMW iXi QTIS 2YO Handicap (1000m) - 12:48pm AEDT
No. 2 El Morzillo

El Morzillo gave a good sight on debut in the Listed Calaway Girl at Eagle Farm last month, tucking in along the rail before she was revved up along the inside to finish second in the end.

She’s drawn a tougher assignment here from out wide, but does get in well with the claim in a race that is lacking the same class.

Her work in a recent Doomben trial was strong on rain-affected going, so if she can be saved for late, there’s a good chance she swoops in down the outside to go close.

Coastline BMQ iX2 Class 3 Plate (1000m) - 1:23pm AEDT
No. 7 Party Spirit

This looks a bit more suitable for Party Spirit dropping back int rip.

Robert Heathcote’s mare had her run of wins snapped on the Gold Coast two weeks ago where 1200m looked a step too far, beaten under a length in the end after trying too hard in the early stages.

She really dug deep to win by 0.8 lengths over this track and distance three back, form that has held up nicely since.

Back on top of the ground with Ben Thompson returning to the irons, this looks right in her wheelhouse.

Coastline BMW iX BM78 Handicap (1600m) - 1:58pm AEDT
No. 1 Solar Apex

Solar Apex is a genuine miler that has to be respected in this field.

The Deep Impact six-year-old was a real eye-catcher fresh at Doomben a few weeks ago, overcoming a bit of a slow start to land midfield and really let down well along the inside to finish runner-up.

The horse he finished behind was no slouch, while he’s also taken on tougher races than this down south in his career. Looks a good bet now with some fitness on his side.

Coastline BMW XM QTIS 3YO Handicap (1000m) - 2:33pm AEDT
No. 2 Bossed Up

Bossed Up could make a mess of his rivals back in grade.

Tony Gollan opted for a tougher challenge a couple of weeks ago on the Gold Coast, lining up in the Magic Millions Syndicate where he was always way too far back to threaten.

Before that, he was a winner of back-to-back starts over 1000m, landing midfield on both occasions before shifting through the gears to win with real authority.

With James Orman back on board, we should see the same type of display from this promising three-year-old.

Coastline BMW X2 OPEN Handicap (1000m) - 3:12pm AEDT
No. 5 Golden Boom

Golden Boom makes his way back to the Sunshine Coast where he’s won twice and placed from three starts.

The Spirit Of Boom four-year-old was the beaten favourite on the Gold Coast first-up in the Syndicate, landing just off the pace where, to his credit, he did stick on well to find the money.

This is much easier though back in grade, not to mention the fact he’s also taken on Stakes company as a three-year-old.

Unbeaten second-up and back in trip, this is basically his to lose.

Coastline BMW X3 BM85 Handicap (1800m) - 3:52pm AEDT
No. 6 Tony Be

Tony Be is back up in Queensland after a brief stint down in Sydney where he was last beaten 4.3 lengths by impressive stablemate Louisville at Rosehill.

He doesn’t win out of turn, but the son of More Than Ready does hold a couple of wins over 1800m, alongside the fact he’s drawn well in barrier 1 under James Orman.

This is his first look at the Sunshine Coast, but fitter second-up with improvement to come, he should be able to give this a real shake.

Listed Coastline BMW Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) - 4:32pm AEDT
No. 6 Essonne

Essonne is more than up to this quality, even if her latest effort at Doomben suggests otherwise.

Richard Litt’s mare was a little too keen early on in the Nudgee Stakes, fading late to finish 2.4 lengths off the impressive Lady Laguna, despite finding conditions to suit.

She’s rock-hard fit though for four runs back and does tend to love racing over the longer 1400m trip.

Off a trial win between starts, she just needs the right run coming off the speed to be a genuine factor.

Coastline BMW 3 Class 6 Handicap (4YO Only QTIS Bonuses Applicable) (1200m) - 5:10pm AEDT
No. 9 Zoumeteor

Zoumeteor is airborne right now for trainer Stuart Kendrick, making it back-to-back wins on the Gold Coast two weeks ago in the Magic Millions Country Cup.

How much petrol is left in the tank is the query, but the fact he offset the wide gate that day and still had something left after leading into the turn was impressive to say the least.

James Orman has been responsible for two of his five career wins to date, and if there is rain about, it shouldn’t faze him.

Coastline BMW BM68 Handicap (1400m) - 5:50pm AEDT
No. 7 Majorelle

Tough race to get a feel for, but certainly one Majorelle could win at good odds.

Matthew Dunn’s four-year-old was flying before the ride went against him at Doomben two weeks ago, over-racing in a key stage after settling too far back early on.

He was enormous at Lismore the run prior on a Heavy 8, so any rain about by this point in the day would be encouraged.

Brodie Loy sticks, and if the tactics are to get more forward this time, they could be thereabouts up on the speed.
