2024 Southern Cross Stakes Day Tips & Preview

Another 10-race card has been assembled at Rosehill on Saturday, headlined by the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes over 1200m.

The Widden Stakes between the fillies shapes as a key form race heading toward the Golden Slipper, while a talented crop of colts will be on display in the Canonbury Stakes.

Our best bets across the entire meeting can be found below.

Midway Handicap (1350m) - 11:30am AEDT
No. 9 Treize

Treize is an honest mare that has cashed a cheque in all five races she’s contested.

The lightly-raced four-year-old by Kermadec made every post a winner to hold ground and score narrowly at Kensington two back, followed by another strong effort off a six-week break at Gosford last-start where she made up ground down the outside for second.

She was a little one-paced around the 300m mark last time out, but is open to improvement with less of a gap between starts. This is the toughest assignment she’s contested, but in well with the claim and likely to get back from the wide gate, she should give it a real shake.

Class 3 Highway Plate (1500m) - 12:05pm AEDT
No. 3 Cenotes

Cenotes had plenty against him over 1400m here a couple of weeks ago when working home well down the outside to finish third to Bon Frankie.

Kerrin McEvoy timed his run well after failing to find cover in transit, the pair hitting the line hard amongst a wall horses charging late.

Getting back on top of the ground can be seen as a positive now, while the inside gate is also to his advantage after struggling from wide draws in both runs back.

Proven over further, another top three finish isn’t out of the question.

Group 3 Arrowfield Canonbury Stakes (1100m) - 12:40pm AEDT
No. 5 Fearless

Leaning the way of Fearless here in an open race between the two-year-olds in the Canonbury Stakes.

This Snowden-trained colt by Pierata resumes on the back of two handy trial wins, last seen on debut in the Breeders Plate back in September where he held his ground well to finish a length off Espionage.

The form out of that race has been okay since, but I do think he’ll be better suited here under Chad Schofield from a kinder gate.

There looks to be some good pace early, so if he can get back and settle off the speed, he should be finishing off nicely over the top.

Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) - 1:15pm AEDT
No. 3 Lady Laguna

Lady Laguna is a class filly that now gets a chance at a hat-trick.

Annabel Neasham’s four-year-old returns from a brief stint in Queensland that saw her add some further black-type to her resume with a win in the Nudgee Stakes, before stepping out on Magic Millions Day where she was far too good winning the Fillies and Mares race by a length.

She’s only improved with racing this prep, and if afforded luck from a sticky gate, her talent will likely do most of the talking against this small field.

Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) - 1:50pm AEDT
No. 6 Lady Of Camelot

Solid race here with the top three all coming out of the Gimcrack over the spring.

Lady Of Camelot did a lot of work to find the front coming out of the turn in that race, leading up until the 50m mark where she was swallowed up by the equally impressive Manaal once her condition gave way.

There was still a lot of merit about that run, and with two sharp trials leading in on this occasion, she should be much harder to run down if she can find the front again in the Widden Stakes.

James Squire Handicap (2000m) - 2:25pm AEDT
No. 4 Morning Sun

This looks a good little race with overseas imports Age Of Sail and Morning Sun set to clash again.

The latter gets in slightly better at the weights this time, also losing no admirers on debut at Warwick Farm when finding an extra gear to just be denied along the inside by Kris Lees’ impressive import.

Like his rival, racing over further is a big tick, especially from a better gate with James McDonald booked to ride this time. Scratched from Wednesday’s meeting at Kensington, this looks a clear target race with plenty of intent from the Annabel Neasham stable.

Breed 4 Speed With KIA Ora Stallions Handicap (1500m) - 3:00pm AEDT

No. 6 Estadio Mestalla

Estadio Mestalla looks ready to peak third-up on the short backup.

Joe Pride’s gelding went around at Randwick last week over shorter, stalking the speed three-wide into the straight where he just lacked the dash to reel in Amor Victorious, who had shown plenty of promise at the trials leading in.

The decision to go again on the seven-day turnaround suggests he’s pulled up well, and I don’t think he’ll know himself getting 5kg’s off with Jason Collett still booked.

Vale Bill Camer Handicap (1350m) - 3:40pm AEDT
No. 2 Powerful Peg

Powerful Peg should be suited by some good early speed as she looks to establish a spot up front.

The Rubick mare is having her third run back after sticking to the task for fourth a couple of weeks ago over slightly further, just fading late over the final 100m behind some much fitter horses.

Third-up, her record reads rather well, while she should find this a much easier race dropping back from a BM88 race.

Schweppes Handicap (1200m) - 4:20pm AEDT
No. 6 Our Kobison

Our Kobison will line up a rightful short-priced favourite coming off a second-up win over 1100m here a fortnight earlier.

It was far from an easy watch for those that took the equally short price, Angela Davies’ four-year-old tucking in along the rail where he waited patiently for a gap to open up before J-Mac pushed the button.

This is the toughest race he’s contested, but with a couple kg’s off and fitness now on his side, he’s tough to tip against.

Expect It All This Autumn at ATC Handicap (1200m) - 4:55pm AEDT
No. 2 Afterlight

Tough race to get a feel for with a few dual acceptors.

Afterlight was racing well around this grade earlier in her prep, winning back-to-back starts Warwick Farm and Canterbury before heading to town.

She’s been far from disgraced in both runs since, only finding the clear late over the track and distance three weeks ago where she was unlucky not to find the money.

The booking of James McDonald is noteworthy and she does map to get a better run into the race this time from barrier 3. Providing the track stays dry, she’s a definite each-way chance.
