Best of the day

Eagle Farm: Race 2 (1:13pm AEDT)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 10 Princess Rhaenys

J: Damien Thornton (58kg) T: Tony Gollan

Princess Rhaenys steps out today third-up and ready to win.

The Iffraaj mare has always been a competitive galloper at metro grade, and she was unlucky not to strike in black type company during this year’s Winter Carnival.

Having blown off the cobwebs when seventh in a Class 3 at Doomben first-up this preparation, she was far better through the line to finish third, beaten half a length last time out. Getting back to the big Eagle Farm track this week suits, as does the rise in trip.

Caulfield: Race 9 (5pm AEDT)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 2 Gravina

J: Michael Dee (57.5kg) T: James Cummings

Gravina has improved for three runs back in featured company this season, and this looks a lovely race for him.

He didn’t beat a runner him in Group 3 company at his first run back on Derby Day, but Gravina has since finished seventh in The Hunter and fifth in the Listed Doveton Stakes here a fortnight ago.

1400m suits, he is reportedly in peak order for this contest, and it looks to be an appropriate drop in class.

Eagle Farm: Race 10 (6:12pm AEDT)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Win

No. 3 Knight's Choice

J: Jaden Lloyd (58kg) T: J G Symons & S Laxon

Knight’s Choice was an impressive winner at Doomben last time out, and something like this looks well within his means as well.

The Extreme Choice gelding has been a good performer throughout his campaign, and finished a credible four lengths behind the winner in The Golden Eagle in November before returning to Queensland and his home track to finish fourth in the Mooloolaba Cup.

He was a class above in similar company most recently, and I think that he will prove too good again today.

Ascot: Race 9 (8:32pm AEDT)

Race Starts in: Race Finished

Each Way

No. 4 Munhamek

J: Damien Oliver (59kg) T: Nick Ryan

Damien Oliver’s final ever race ride will be aboard Munhamek in The Gold Rush, and I’m keen to have something on at the double-figure price ($9 at publish).

Munhamek has been a war horse for many seasons now, picking off some lovely races and recently, playing a big role in trainer Nick Ryan stamping himself as a trainer to watch.

Having resumed to finish third in the Group 2 Damien Oliver at Flemington last month, Munhamek was well beaten in the Neds Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at his latest, but this is a drop in class from that race, and I like that he has been back to the trials since.
