2023 Northerly Stakes Day Tips & Preview

The final Group 1 race of the calendar year in Australia headlines 2023 Northerly Stakes Day at Ascot on Saturday!

There are nine winners to be found, so be sure to scroll down and check out my complete 2023 Northerly Stakes Day Tips.

Magic Millions Plate (1000m) – 3:05pm AEDT
No Bet

There’s hardly any form to study ahead of this race and plenty of debutants are prominent in betting.

I’m happy to stay out of this one from a betting perspective.

Amelia Park Plate (1000m) – 3:45pm AEDT
No. 6 Final Siren

Final Siren puts an unbeaten record on the line and looms as the one to beat again.

The son of I’m All The Talk debuted with a dominant five-length romp at Albany last month, and repeated that performance and result in Class 2 company at his only other appearance.

This is harder, but it also looks the next logical step for him to take.

Scenic Shot Handicap (2200m) – 4:25pm AEDT
No. 2 Demolish

Neville Parnham’s horses are flying, and I’m confident Demolish can return the stable another victory on Northerly Stakes Day.

The Rich Enuff gelding has only won two of his twenty-two career starts to date, but he has been a model of consistency throughout, and placed a further fifteen times.

He has been knocking on the door of another win in three starts back this time and looks to get ideal conditions this week.

Listed G.A. Towton Cup (2200m) – 5:05pm AEDT
No. 2 Another Chino

This looks to be one of the more open races on Northerly Stakes Day in my opinion, and I thought that Another Chino looked a key winning chance.

Another Chino his mixed his form this time in, but he was an eye-catching winner of the Luckygray here two back, and was very luckless in the run at his latest.

He’s hard fit and the 2200m looks ideal at this point of his preparation.

Westspeed Platinum Series Final (1400m) – 5:44pm AEDT
No. 7 Playz With Fire

Playz With Fire has finished second at each of three starts back this time, and I am happy to give her one more chance at Ascot on Saturday.

The Playing God mare has clearly been competitive, and she has improved with each run back, she’s just been unable to get over the line and has been a frustrating one for punters.

She’s hard fit this week, Pike rides from a good draw and she really won’t have any excuses.

The Drummond Club Handicap (1200m) – 6:25pm AEDT
No. 13 Stormy Tawny

Stormy Tawny has found top gear and strikes another winnable race on Northerly Stakes Day.

The Oratorio mare stripped fitter with a couple of competitive efforts at the beginning of her campaign this time, and she returned to winning form in Class 3 company here two starts back.

Having franked that performance with another smart win at her latest, she’s another that has conditions to suit this week, and I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish again.

Furphy Handicap (1000m) – 7:05pm AEDT
No. 10 Hanchi

Sean & Jake Casey hold a strong hand at Ascot on Saturday, and I think that Hanchi will be winning this race.

Hanchi is yet to strike in two starts back from a break, but he hit the line to finish second behind an impressive Oscar’s Fortune in the Placid Ark Prelude first-up last month, and worked home fairly in the Placid Ark at his latest.

Fitter third-up and dropping in class, he might not be offered a better opportunity to win than this.

Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) – 7:45pm AEDT
No. 1 Zaaki

This is another outstanding edition of the Northerly Stakes, with some of WA’s best gallopers joined by an intriguing interstate contingent.

Zaaki is the class in my opinion and will take a power of beating, but check out my full race preview and 2023 Northerly Stakes Tips RIGHT HERE.

best bet
Have You Got The Touch Handicap (1600m) – 8:22pm AEDT
No. 6 Starry Heights

Starry Heights has been nothing short of outstanding this year, and he looks a great bet again in the last on Northerly Stakes Day.

The Star Turn gelding ended his last prep with four consecutive race wins, and picked up where he left off with an eye-catching victory over 1400m here a fortnight ago.

With further improvement for that effort, he is my best bet on the program.
