Doomben Tips & Preview – Saturday 26th August

Nine races will be run and won at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse on Saturday, August 26th.

There is plenty of value to be found as the state gears up for spring, and you can find my Doomben Tips below.

Country Music Raceday 9 September Class 3 Plate (1050m) – 11:53am
No. 1 Devastating

Devastating takes winning form into the first at Doomben on Saturday and rates as a key winning chance again.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding only just missed in Class 3 company at Eagle Farm first start back, but took plenty of improvement into a comfortable win at his latest.

Fitter third-up, I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish.

Cascade BM90 Handicap (2000m) – 12:28pm
No. 5 Wairere Falls

Wairere Falls hasn’t won a race for some time, but his last couple of performances suggested that a win isn’t too far away.

The Savabeel gelding has been a very credible performer for the Waller yard for a few years now, and he only just missed here at Doomben two back before hitting the line again to finish only half a length behind the winner at Eagle Farm.

He’s hard-fit, drawn well and might not be offered a better opportunity to win.

Sky Racing BM70 Handicap (1350m) – 1:03pm
No. 13 Invisible Tears

One of the more open races on the program and at publish, we’re faced with $6 the field.

It’s another rise in class, but Invisible Tears has been racing in good form this time, and she looks a genuine each way chance again ($10 at publish).

The Maurice mare finished third, beaten by just over a length and a half here two starts back before charging through to win at the Sunshine Coast.

She’s hard fit, drawn and weighted well and does look a touch of overs in my opinion.

Spring Carnival On Sale Now Class 3 Plate (1600m) – 1:38pm
No. 1 Ashgrove

Happy to give Ashgrove another chance when he steps out at Doomben on Saturday.

Ashgrove is yet to strike in three starts back this time, but after showing good improvement into his second campaign start, he was a little luckless at his latest.

He has drawn horrifically, but the booking of James Orman certainly helps and I’m confident his class edge will shine through with appropriate luck.

XXXX QTIS Class 6 Plate (1350m) – 2:13pm
No. 13 Kinloch

This looks like Kinloch’s opportunity to strike.

He won the Provincial Championships Final last year, and while Kinloch hasn’t managed to return to those heights, there’s no doubt he has been good, and on the improve, this time in.

After only just missing in a photo at Eagle Farm at his latest, he’s been back to the trials and just requires some luck in running to be right in the finish again.

BRC Membership On Sale Now BM78 Handicap (1200m) – 2:48pm
No. 7 Vodka Martini

Vodka Martini has been nothing short of outstanding this time and he looks well placed to pull off a hat-trick of wins at Doomben on Saturday.

Vodka Martini filled the minors at each of his first two runs back and justified odds-on quotes at each of his last two.

He has options in running from the rails draw and is my best bet on the program.

Ladbrokes Mates Mode QTIS 3YO Plate (1200m) – 3:23pm
No. 6 The Player

The Player was unlucky not to get there in his first run back from a break, but can go one better at Doomben this week.

The Player stamped himself as one to follow when winning on debut at the Sunshine Coast back in January, but finished down the order in the Inglis Millenium and was sent for a break.

Having only been denied by Miss Coota, a great horse in her own right at his first run back, I really can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish here.

Drinkwise Open Handicap (1200m) – 4:02pm
No. 1 Spaceboy

Spaceboy looks to get conditions to suit in Brisbane on Saturday and I think he’ll take beating.

While he hasn’t tasted success for a little while now, Spaceboy has been returning some good performances recently and he was unlucky to be nailed late after leading here two back.

He’s hard fit, can go straight to the lead from Box 1 and will carry a light weight this week.

Gallopers Sports Club BM85 Handicap (1600m) – 4:38pm
No. 2 Point Counterpoint

I quite like Point Counterpoint second-up in the last at Doomben on Saturday at a nice price ($11 at publish).

Point Counterpoint was a strong and consistent performer in some really good country features last time in, ending his campaign with a couple of nice performances in town, he returned earlier this month to finish midfield in the Coffs Cup.

He’s a horse that tends to enjoy good improvement with a run under his belt and we can have something on each way in this.
