2023 Octagonal Handicap Day Tips & Preview

Ten races will be run and won at Sydney’s Royal Randwick on Saturday, May 27th.

I’ve done a deep dive into the form of everything engaged, and you can find all of my Royal Randwick Tips below.

Wilson Asset Management Handicap (1400m) – 11am
No. 5 Vomo Island

Vomo Island has returned two nice performances since debuting and is ready to break his maiden at Randwick on Saturday.

The Team Snowden-trained galloper hit the line at Canterbury to only just miss back in February, and returned from a freshen-up to fill the minors at the same course earlier this month.

I like that he has been back to the trials again and he can begin his rise through the grades this week.

Highway Handicap (1400m) – 11:35am
No. 1 Overlord

Overlord has been transferred to the care of Gayna Williams this time in, and I am very keen to see him go around in a Highway Handicap this week.

By Sebring and out of multiple Group 1 winner Red Tracer, Overlord has always hinted at ability but has often struggled to put it all together in metro company.

I think something like this is far more appropriate for him, and we can have an each way play this week at current odds ($13 at publish).

Midway Handicap (1200m) – 12:10pm
No. 8 Karedada

Karedada has recorded two wins from as many starts back this time, and I’m happy to stick with him on Octagonal Handicap Day.

The Wandjina gelding went to the paddock after breaking his maiden at Newcastle back in October, and picked up where he left off at the same course.

He steps out this week third-up and following a dominant win at Gosford, and while this is harder, it also looks the next logical step for him to take.

Taylor Handicap (1200m) – 12:45pm
No. 7 Tashi

Another open race with plenty of winning chances engaged, including Tashi.

Tashi hasn’t been seen at the races since December, but she is also yet to turn in a poor performances, and is yet to finish outside of the placings.

She’s had the benefit of a couple of trials leading up to her resumption, she’s drawn and weighted well, and I thought that the $7 about her at publish looked a touch of overs.

Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (1400m) – 1:20pm
No. 4 Kazou

Kazou takes winning form into Race 5 at Randwick on Saturday and looks well placed to make it two in a row.

The Zoustar filly has recorded three wins from her five career starts to date, placing on another occasion and finding form around some talented rivals.

She was nothing short of dominant on the Kensington track here at her latest, and this looks the perfect opportunity to transition to Saturday metro company.

Swysh Handicap (2000m) – 1:55pm
No. 4 Estadio Mestalla

I’m happy to give Estadio Mestalla another chance third-up on Octagonal Handicap Day.

Estadio Mestalla finished second, beaten two lengths in BM88 company on Hawkesbury old Cup Day, before a fair effort without threatening on Dark Jewel Classic Day.

Fitter third-up and out to the 2000m, he gets some relief in the weights this week under Dylan Gibbons and can bounce back.

Fujitsu Airstage Handicap (1000m) – 2:30pm
No. 4 Treporto

I thought that this looked a lovely race for Treporti.

Treporti returned to the races with a nice effort to finish third in the Murray Bridge Magic Millions 3&4YO race before return to winning form at Bendigo last time.

I love that Danny O’Brien is sending him north this week (I don’t think that he would unless he rated him a key winning chance), and he has form around some excellent horses.

From a good draw this week, I think he’s over at $13 (at publish).

James Tedesco Outreach Program Handicap (1100m) – 3:05pm
No. 4 Dragonstone

Dragonstone will have his first start for sprint king Joe Pride at Randwick on Saturday, and I think he’ll take beating.

The Mikki Isle gelding has always hinted at above-average talent, and to his credit, he has picked off some lovely races.

I’m expecting the change in scenery to do him well, while he has also drawn ideally into this race under Brett Prebble.

Precise Fire (Octagonal) Handicap (1400m) – 3:45pm
No. 4 Tamerlane

There’s a few horses that have caught my eye in this year’s Octagonal Handicap field, but with the benefit of fitness on his side, I’m going to have something on Tamerlane.

Tamerlane recorded consecutive victories in races not dissimilar to this one in March and April, and he worked home well for fourth in Listed company last time out.

I’m actually expecting improvement into this race, and he just need some luck in running from a wide draw to figure in the finish again.

Hitech Plumbing Handicap (1300m0 – 4:25pm
No. 13 Shipshape

The consistent Shipshape goes around in the last on Octagonal Handicap Day and rates as a key winning chance again.

Shipshape hasn’t missed a placing in five starts back from a break, winning twice before only just missing in BM72 company last time out.

In peak order and down in the weights, I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again.
