2023 Bel Esprit Stakes Day Tips & Preview

Black type racing returns to Sandown on Bel Esprit Stakes Day.

There are nine winners to be found in total, and I have done all the heavy lifting for you below with my 2023 Bel Esprit Stakes Day Tips!

Ladbrokes Racing Club Handicap (1000m) – 11:50am
No. 2 Herecomesthestar

Herecomesthestar won on debut and can continue her rise through the grades on Bel Esprit Stakes Day.

The Zoustar filly mustered a nice turn of foot to hit the line half a length ahead of Austmarr, and I am confident that she will only improve for the experience.

Schweppes Handicap (1000m) – 12:25pm
No. 1 Cotel

Cotel hasn’t been seen at the races since January, but she flies fresh, and this looks an ideal kick-off point for her.

The Charge Forward filly won on debut at Caulfield last winter and was immediately tipped out, and she resumed for another easy win at Cranbourne.

She wasn’t out of her depth in featured company subsequently, and she has reportedly relished her time away from the races.

Evergreen Turf Handicap (1600m) – 1pm
No. 1 Good And Proper

Good And Proper has returned to the races in nice form, and she can record another race win on Bel Esprit Stakes Day.

The Shooting To Win mare won a lucrative VOBIS race here two starts back, and flashed late to fill the minors over 1400m at Flemington last time out.

Getting out to the mile at this point of her preparation looks ideal, and she’ll enjoy some relief in the weights this week under Laura Lafferty.

Barry J Brennan Memorial Trophy (1300m) – 1:35pm
No. 11 Tasman Park

He has drawn awkwardly into his first-up target, but Tasman Park was excellent during his debut prep, and I think that he’ll be right in the finish again on Saturday.

The Ocean Park gelding won each of his first three career starts, each tougher than the last, and he went to the paddock after filling the minors behind Riverplate in BM70 company.

With appropriate luck earlier, I think that the $10 about him at publish could prove overs.

Lamaro’s Hotel Handicap (1600m) – 2:10pm
No. 3 Euphoric

Euphoric has recorded two wins from as many starts back this time, and I am more than happy to stick with him on Bel Esprit Stakes Day.

The Sebring gelding kept his best work for late when he just got there at Pakenham first-up this time, and took plenty of improvement into a lovely win at Flemington a fortnight ago, his first in town.

Fitter third-up, he’s another one that looks ideally suited to mile this week, and he is drawn to receive every chance again.

Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1000m) – 2:45pm
No. 7 Katsu

Katsu is chasing a hat-trick when he takes his place in the Bel Esprit Stakes, and I think it looks a nice bit of black type for him.

The Mikki Isle gelding was a dominant winner in BM70 company at Sale first-up this time, and he repeated the effort over this route last time.

He is a month between starts, but I don’t see that being anything of an issue at all.

IVE Handicap (1400m) – 3:25pm
No. 6 He's Our Bonneval

I’m confident that He’s Our Bonneval will enjoy plenty of improvement from a credible first-up effort here earlier this month, and this rates as a winnable race for him.

The Siyouni gelding has returned several eye-catching performances since arriving in Australia, and I thought that his fresh effort, which saw him hit the line just over a length behind the winner, suggested that he has returned in good order again.

D. Oliver jumps into this saddle this week, and something like this looks well within this horse’s means.

Marshall White Handicap (1600m) – 4:05pm
No. 9 Kooled

This looks to be the most open race on the Bel Esprit Stakes Day program, and there really is a case to be built more many of them.

Kooled has proven to be a great horse for the Ben Brisbourne yard for a couple of seasons now, and I’m inclined to give him a chance at huge odds this week ($27 at publish).

Kooled won the VOBIS Gold Eldorado at Echuca back in March, and he’s actually only missed placing once in five starts back.

He was well beaten by British Columbia here at his latest, but he still returned a nice performance to fill the minors, and we can have a small each way play at the quote this week.

Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1800m) – 4:40pm
No. 1 Pinstriped

Pinstriped is on the short back-up from another impressive win at Flemington last weekend, and he just needs some luck from out wide to be right in the finish again.

The Street Boss gelding has improved with each run back from a break, and he was rewarded with a dominant win in the VOBIS Gold Mile here two back.

He kicked clear of a BM100 field last week, and getting out to the 1800m does look as though it will suit.
