2023 The Quokka Day Tips & Preview

$4 million goes on the line when some of the best sprinters in the country assemble for the inaugural running of The Quokka!

It’s the first-ever thoroughbred slot race to be held in Western Australia, and if the field for the first edition is any indication, The Quokka will be a major target for the country’s biggest stables for many years to come.

You can find all of my thoughts and complete 2023 The Quokka Day Tips below!

Schweppes Handicap (1100m) – 1:25pm AEST
No. 1 Cosmopolitan Girl

Cosmopolitan Girl is up to winning the first on The Quokka Day.

Cosmopolitan Girl finished down the order over 1200m here when resuming, but she has since turned in two lovely efforts, winning at Belmont before only just missing here, last time out.

She steps out this week in peak order and the 1100m should prove ideal.

Westspeed Platinum Handicap (1600m) – 1:59pm AEST
No. 1 Awesome Chatter

This looks a lovely race for Awesome Chatter.

Awesome Chatter didn’t enjoy the best of luck and was a little flat last time out, but his form prior to that was excellent, and included a couple of eye catching wins over a mile.

He’s rock-hard fit and does look to have a number of these rivals covered for class.

Furphy Handicap (1200m) – 2:37pm AEST
No. 2 Brave Venture

Brave Venture hasn’t been seen at the races since December, but he was faultless last prep, and he can make a winning return on The Quokka Day.

Brave Venture has only made five appearances at the races so far, but he has more than stamped himself as one to watch by winning three times, and only just missing on another occasion.

He flies fresh and has had the benefit of a trial in the lead up to his return.

Amelia Park Lamb Handicap (1800m) – 3:17pm AEST
No. 2 Classic Rogue

Classic Rogue is a galloper in form, and he strikes another winnable race on The Quokka Day.

The Steve Wolfe-trained gelding recorded an impressive win over 1500m here two starts back, and he was only just denied by Mountain Ash at his most recent.

Getting out to the 1800m looks ideal at this point of his preparation, and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again.

best bet
Amelia Park Beef Handicap (1000m) – 3:57pm AEST
No. 4 Snowdome

Snowdome takes winning form into the fifth and looks well placed to make it two in a row.

Snowdome has been a great horse for Neville Parnham since making his debut, but he looks to have returned an improved galloper this time, and filled the minors behind Ginger Green first-up before beating some classy runners home over the same route, last time out.

Fitter third-up, he is my best bet on the program.

each way
V&V Walsh Handicap (1800m) – 4:34pm AEST
No. 8 Rusty Spirit

This looms as one of the more open races on the program, and I thought that Rusty Spirit looked a touch of overs at current odds ($7.50 at publish).

Rusty Spirit recorded consecutive wins over a mile and 1500m respectively here two and three starts back, but he did return something of a flat effort last time out.

He steps out this week in peak order, Willy Pike jumps back into the saddle, and we can have something on each way at the quote.

Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) – 5:13pm AEST
No. 6 Live To Tell

Formerly the main feature race on the program, The Karrakatta Plate has drawn a smart field of juveniles, I think that Live To Tell will justify her clear market favouritism.

The Territories filly finished second on debut here back in October and was immediately put away, and she has so far recorded consecutive wins in the Supremacy Stakes and the Gimcrack this time in.

Fitter third-up, this is the next logical target!

The Quokka (1200m) – 5:50pm AEST
No. 10 Bella Nipotina

$4 million goes on the line in the inaugural running of Perth’s first-ever thoroughbred slot race – The Quokka!

Leading local Amelia’s Jewel has opened favourite in The Quokka betting, but she has drawn the carpark, and I am keen to take her on in what is clearly the biggest test of her career to date.

Bella Nipotina is the class horse in my opinion, and she is therefore the one for me.

Bella Nipotina finally realised her Group 1 potential with an utterly dominant win in the Manikato Stakes in spring, and while she is yet to win in three starts back this time, she is twice placed I group 1 company.

Ben Melham rides, she’s drawn a peach, and I think that Bella Nipotina be The Quokka winner.

The Joey (1200m) – 6:25pm AEST
No. 12 Revitup

Revitup clearly needed the run when eighth in the Roma Cup first-up from a spell, but I am confident of big improvement into a weaker race this week.

The Demerit filly has been a great horse for the Dion Luciani yard throughout her career, recording six wins from thirteen starts and placing a further five times.

She gets into this race well at the weights, and under William Pike!

Crown Perth Handicap (1400m) – 7pm AEST
No. 3 Top Of The Pops

I’m with the (early) favourite in the last on The Quokka Day!

Top Of The Pops stamped himself as one to watch by winning each of his first four career starts las year, and while he is yet to strike in two starts back this time, he has improved noticeably for each.

Fitter third-up and out to the 1400m, this looks his opportunity.
