2023 QTIS Jewel Day Tips & Preview

It’s Slipper Day in Sydney and All-Star Mile Day in Melbourne, but feature racing also graces the Sunshine State on Saturday!

We’re somewhere between Magic Millions Day and the beginning of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, and QTIS Jewel Day has attracted quality fields to Doomben, with nine winners to be found in total.

I’ve had a deep dive through the program, and you can find my complete 2023 QTIS Jewel Day Tips below!

Ladbrokes Mate Mode BM78 Handicap (1050m) – 12:53pm AEDT
No. 6 Hold On Honey

It could be another massive day country-wide for Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted, and at the very least, I think they’ll saddle the winner of this race with Hold On Honey.

Hold On Honey won each of his first three starts back this time, and he returned from a freshen up to finish second in a similar race late last month.

Any improvement on that effort, I think he’ll simply prove too good for this lot.

Magic Millions Gold Coast Plate (2000m) – 1:33pm AEDT
No. 7 Navajo Peak

Navajo Peak has improved for two back and looks ready to peak third-up on QTIS Jewel Day.

The David Payne-trained gelding was a strong and consistent performer last time in, and he returned with a nice effort behind Lindermann at Rosehill last month.

He was last seen finishing second, beaten a head over a mile at Randwick, and getting out to 2000m in Brisbane this week looks absolutely ideal.

Jim Roberts 35 Years Of Service Class 6 Handicap (1600m) – 2:08pm AEDT
No. 10 Secret Tales

Secret Tales looked like being an absolute horror story here when held up at a vital time, last time out, but she let down with an impressive turn of foot to win, and I think that she can do it again this week.

The daughter of Spill The Beans has returned two decent efforts back this time, but her last was amongst the best of her career.

Fitter third-up, from a good draw and with no weight in tow, she can continue her rise through the grades.

Pat Welsh Class 3 Plate (1200m) – 2:48pm AEDT
No. 4 Buying Time

Buying Time only just missed over this route at his last appearance, and he looks well placed to go one better on Saturday.

The Deep Field gelding was far too good for a Class 1 field first-up from a spell, and went close to atoning from a flat second-up effort when running on well, last time.

He steps out this week in peak order, is drawn ideally and needs only even luck to be right in the finish again.

AQUIS Stallions The Gold Jewel (1350m) – 3:28pm AEDT
No. 1 Tumbler Ridge

Tumbler Ridge was decent for fourth, though well beaten by Chaillot in the Sunshine Coast Cup back in January, and he makes his return from a fresh up in this race.

The Spill The Beans entire has been a great horse for O’Dea & Hoysted for a few seasons now, and he ended his last prep with a couple of lovely wins here at Doomben.

He boasts a class edge over several of these rivals and it looks a nice feature for him.

No. 7 Mabel

Mabel was scratched from the Provincial Championships Qualifier at Gosford on Thursday to instead run here, and I think that it might prove to be the correct decision.

Mabel has been a good and consistent performer for the Tracey Bartley yard throughout her prep, and she recorded a lovely win in BM72 company at Randwick two starts back, while only just missing again there last time out.

She’s rock-hard fit and something like this does look within her means, and we can have an each way play at current odds ($8 at publish).

Sky Racing QTIS Jewel (1200m) – 4:53pm AEDT
No. 8 Mishani Royale

Don’t be fooled – there ARE 2 RACES named the QTIS Jewel at Doomben on Saturday. Like the Magic Millions, there is a race for two-year-olds and a race for three-year-olds. This one is the former.

Now that’s been cleared, Mishani Royale has hardly put a hoof wrong since debuting, and I am keen to stick with him.

The Kobayashi filly finished second behind Show Me Mercy at the Sunshine Coast on debut in November and hasn’t looked back, winning each of her three subsequent starts impressively.

Her most recently, a near two-length triumph over 1000m at Eagle Farm came after being freshened, and I am only expecting her to improve for it.

Channel 7 QTIS Jewel (1200m) – 5:30pm AEDT
No. 11 She'sgottheboom

There looks to be a bit of value about in the three-year-old race and I’m going to have something on the second-up She’sgottheboom.

She’sgottheboom won her first three career starts last year and suffered her first defeat in the Quezette Stakes at Caulfield, and she just looked in need of a run here at Doomben when resuming.

With improvement and from the good draw, I think she’ll be bouncing back.

No. 15 Da Party Girl

Not the easiest way to end the day from a betting perspective and at publish, we’re looking at $7 the field.

I thought that Da Party Girl would be open to improvement from a modest first-up effort, and that’s the way I am going to look.

Da Party Girl recorded two wins and a second placing from her three starts last time in, finding form around some talented gallopers.

I thought the fresh run this time was better than her seventh placing suggested, and we can have an each way play this week at around the $10 mark (at publish).
