2023 Australian Guineas Day Tips & Preview

It’s one of the most popular, time-honoured race days of the Melbourne autumn, and we set for another exciting Australian Guineas Day at Flemington!

I’ve run the rule over every galloper and contest, and you can find all of my thoughts and 2023 Australian Guineas Day Tips below.

Listed Furphy Trophy (1000m) – 12:35pm AEDT
No Bet

There are plenty of debutants going around in the first on Australian Guineas Day, and a few of them are prominent in the market!

I can’t find anything that I am particularly keen on here, and I am happy to stay out of it from a betting perspective.

Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Tenders Open (2500m) – 1:10pm AEDT
No. 5 Timour

So Unusual has recorded a hat-trick leading into this contest and has opened our market favourite, but I thought that it looked a really nice race for Timour, and I am going to have something on him.

The Gleneagles gelding needed his first two runs in Australia to find his best, but turned in an improved effort to finish fourth in BM84 company here last time out.

He’ll take further improvement into this race, while getting out to 2500m here at Flemington looks absolutely perfect for him.

CARM Trophy (1000m) – 1:45pm AEDT
No. 1 Oxley Road

Oxley Road’s condition gave out easily after he led them up in the Rubiton Stakes, but I am expecting wholesale improvement second up and back to the Flemington straight.

Oxley Road has been a good horse for the Moody stable since debuting, but he has mixed his form a little, particularly when striking wet tracks.

It looks likely we’ll be racing on a good surface on Saturday, and Luke Nolen is the right hoop to get the most out of this five-year-old son of Exceed And Excel.

VRC Life Member John Ford Sprint (1000m) – 2:20pm AEDT
No. 3 Ojai

I thought that Ojai was good when fourth, beaten just over half a length in the Kevin Hayes Stakes when resuming, and this looks a great race for her.

The Exceed And Excel filly returned some lovely efforts last time in, unlucky to only just miss in the Quezette Stakes most notably.

Her first-up effort this time hinted at improvement, and I think that the $5.50 we’re getting for her (at publish) in a slightly weaker race this week is a touch of overs.

The Schweppes Plate (1600m) – 3pm AEDT
No. 7 Ima Shelby

Ima Shelby is as consistent as they come, and I think that a mile at Flemington this weekend will result in a return to winning form.

Ima Shelby has recorded a career total of four wins and six minors from his fifteen appearances, and he has been right in the finish of each of his last four.

He steps out this week rock-hard fit, he’s drawn ideally, and I think that the return of Micky Dee to the saddle will prove beneficial for him as well.

Inglis Sprint (1200m) – 3:40pm AEDT
No. 6 Paris Dior

Another wide-open race and at publish, we’re faced with nearly $7 the field!

Paris Dior hasn’t been seen at the races since November, and she hasn’t won since April last year, but she has continued to perform well in good races, and around some excellent competition.

Her fresh record is excellent, Jye McNeil can find the rail immediately from barrier 1, and we can have an each way play at around the $9 mark.

Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) – 4:20pm AEDT
No. 1 Jacquinot

A talented field of three-year-olds will contest the Australian Guineas!

I’ve put Jacquinot on top, but check out my full race preview and complete 2023 Australian Guineas Tips RIGHT HERE.

Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) – 5pm AEDT
No. 1 Tuvalu

Some excellent milers have been confirmed in the 2023 Blamey Stakes field, but with the All-Star Mile looming, I think that Tuvalu will be geared up and ready to win.

Tuvalu has always been a competitive horse, but midweek BM72s looked to be his go, and it wouldn’t have been a terrible career by any stretch of the imagination.

He went to a whole new level in the spring, however, culminating in a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.

He clearly needed his first back when seventh in the CF Orr Stakes, but this is a drop in grade, and getting out to his pet trip obviously suits.

Resimax Group Plate (1200m) – 5:40pm AEDT
No. 1 Pinstriped

Pinstriped makes his eagerly awaited return to the races in the last on Australian Guineas Day and is over the odds at $10 (at publish).

The Street Boss gelding finished at the tail of the field in The Golden Eagle at his most recent appearance, but his form prior to that run was typically competitive, and he loves racing here at Flemington.

I think that he is a very good chance of winning, but he’s another whom we can have something on each way.
