2023 Australian Cup Day Tips & Preview

The $3 million Australian Cup headlines Saturday’s nine-race program at Flemington!

We’re in the thick of the Autumn Racing Carnival, and with so much talent engaged, some terrific betting races have materialised.

You can find my complete 2023 Australian Cup Day Tips below.

Good Friday Appeal Trophy (1100m) – 12:25pm AEDT
No. 9 Snapped

I was pretty keen on Scorched Earth in this race when fields were released, but with her scratching, I’m now going to have something on Snapped.

Snapped has made three appearances at the races since resuming, winning in BM70 company at Sandown most notably, while she was far from disgraced in the Bellmaine Stakes last time out.

She steps out this week in peak order and should relish the drop in class.

Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) – 1pm AEDT
No. 2 Hell Queen

Hell Queen looks to have plenty of ability, and this looks a nice bit of black type for her.

The Hellbent filly is yet to miss placing in four trips to the races, and finished second in the Talindert Stakes first-up from a spell before breaking her maiden with complete ease at Bendigo.

She’s proven down the Flemington straight and can continue her rise through the grades.

best bet
Rubaroc Grand Handicap Classic (2000m) – 1:40pm AEDT
No. 5 Kettle Hill

I’m pretty keen on Kettle Hill in the third on Australian Cup Day.

The Gleneagles gelding split Munhamek and Sparkle here at HQ at his most recent appearances, and the form out of that race has been franked with the latter coming out and winning a Saturday metro race subsequently.

This bloke is in peak order and the 2000m at Flemington should prove absolutely ideal for him.

Listed Boy Hoysted Handicap (1000m) – 2:20pm AEDT
No. 3 On The Lead

Great race for On The Lead.

On The Lead has been a strong and consistent performer throughout his prep, knocking off Inundation at Sandown back in January, and he returned from a freshen up to finish second behind Kallos at this track and trip.

With natural improvement, I think he’ll prove extremely difficult to beat on Saturday.

Listed Roy Higgins Quality (3pm AEDT)
No. 6 Young Werther

Ballot-free entry into the Melbourne Cup goes on the line, and I am going to stick with Young Werther in the Roy Higgins Quality.

He’s yet to strike in three starts back from a spell, but there is no doubt that Young Werther has been on the improve, and he was last seen finishing fourth over 2000m here in the Australian Cup Prelude.

I thought that it was the run of a horse crying out for a trip, and while he has recorded just the one career victory, I thought that this looked a great opportunity for him.

Listed Sunlight Classic (1100m) – 3:40pm AEDT
No. 8 What You Need

What You Need puts an unbeaten record on the line in the Sunlight Classic and does look the one to beat again.

The Supido colt was a dominant winner over the likes of Lascars on debut at Geelong back in August, and he returned a three-length winner here a fortnight ago.

This is harder, but it does look the next logical step for him, and a repeat of that last effort would see him winning again.

Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) – 4:20pm AEDT
No. 4 Nonconformist

The time-honoured Australian Cup is always a highlight of the Autumn Carnival, and we’ll be treated to another open edition of the $3 million classic on Saturday.

I think that this is Nonconformist’s time to shine, but check out my full race preview and complete 2023 Australian Cup Tips RIGHT HERE.

Choices Flooring Handicap (1400m) – 5pm AEDT
No. 3 Pinstriped

Pinstriped will take plenty of improvement into his second campaign start at Flemington on Saturday, and I think he’ll take plenty of beating.

The Street Boss gelding has been an outstanding performer for the Enver Jusofovic yard since debuting, but he clearly needed his first run back behind Sessions Road here earlier this month.

His second-up record is excellent, and with luck from the draw, he can fight out the finish.

each way
Benchmark 80 Sprint (1200m) – 5:40pm AEDT
No. 1 Kooled

Kooled takes winning form into the last on Australian Cup Day and rates as a key winning chance again, at a lovely price ($8 at publish).

The Frosted gelding finished third, beaten two and a half lengths at The Valley first-up from a spell, but charged home to win the lucrative VOBIS Gold Eldorado at Echuca last time.

Fitter third-up, this looks a great metro target for him, and he’s another whom we can have something on each way.
