A-League Round 17 Tips & Previews

A-League Round 17 Tips & Previews

One of the closest A-League seasons in the competition’s history is set for another exciting round of action.

Melbourne City might be running away with the premiership, but the race for the remaining finals spots could not be more up in the air with every club in position to go on a run, getting positive results could not be more important.

This weekend’s biggest game features first against last as we have another edition of the Melbourne Derby between City and Victory with what is sure to be an electric atmosphere.

We’ve got our tips and previews for every A-League match below so check out our breakdowns below.

Western United v Wellington Phoenix
Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.75

Over the last four weeks, both teams in this fixture have had exactly the same run of results.

Both Western United and Wellington have picked up a grand total of four points with a win, a draw and most recently back to back defeats.

The Nix continue their Australian tour with a third successive away match but you do wonder if the travel is starting to take its toll on this side.

Neither side has been overly strong defensively and there is the potential for this to turn into a high scoring contest.

Western United have conceded 30 goals, the worst record in the league while Wellington is not that far behind with 26 goals in 16 matches.

Don’t force yourself into backing one side over another and instead take the over for the total goals market.

Sydney FC v Brisbane Roar
Sydney FC to Win @ $1.85

Quite a lot has changed since these two clubs met back in November when the Roar ran out 3-1 winners at Redcliffe.

Brisbane has undergone a massive squad overhaul and their new faces will need to fire starting this weekend with the Roar five points adrift of the top six.

Sydney FC on the other hand is flying with three straight wins including a hard fought derby victory last weekend.

While the Roar have won the last two matches between these teams, it’s just too hard to back them after three straight defeats and six matches without a win.

Macarthur FC v Newcastle Jets
Newcastle to Win @ $2.80

For better or worse, Newcastle is turning into must watch football over the last few weeks.

With nine points from their last five matches, the Jets are closing in on a top six spot.

Macarthur managed to pick up its first win since the departure of Dwight Yorke last weekend and they will be hoping that is a sign this team is turning the corner.

However one win is not enough to forget the struggles they have had and the Jets have been a much more productive side after a couple of creative tweaks from Arthur Pappas.

Newcastle should not be outsiders in this market, even on the road and they are the play for this match.

Melbourne Victory v Melbourne City
Melbourne City to Win @ $1.90

We all remember the last Melbourne Derby just before Christmas and it will surely come up in the lead up to this fixture, but we should see this match played to completion.

City are the nominal visitors for this match but they have loved playing at AAMI Park this season having gone unbeaten at the venue all season.

Meanwhile the Victory could have a chance to move off the foot of the A-League ladder with a win here and other results going their way but it’s tough to have any confidence in them against the league leaders.

Keep this one nice and simple, back City to pick up all three points as they take another step towards yet another premiership.

Perth Glory v Central Coast Mariners
Over 2.5 Goals @ $1.75

We’re off to the Wild West to wrap up a busy Saturday of A-League action and there should be no shortage of goals here.

Perth suffered their first defeat at Macedonia Park this season when Melbourne City ran over them late, but their effort in that game should not be discounted.

Central Coast held onto second place with a hard fought win in Brisbane last week but they have also played in their share of high scoring matches too.

Take the price on the overs here with a 2-1 win for one of these sides seeming like the lowest scoring possible outcome.

Adelaide United v Western Sydney Wanderers
Adelaide to Win @ $2.30

By the time they kick off one or both might have been knocked out of it, but heading into Round 17, this top 4 battle has the makings of a classic.

The Reds are the in-form team in the A-League with 11 points from their last five matches including back to back dramatic wins over Brisbane and Western United.

Western Sydney on the other hand have been a bit up and down, with last week’s derby defeat costing them second spot.

We’re going to follow the form and back an Adelaide win for our play in this game with the Reds very much shaping up as a major challenger come finals time.
