2023 Australia Day Cup Day Tips & Preview

Black type racing returns to Warwick Farm on Thursday, and the Australia Day Cup headlines an intriguing eight-race program.

I’ve run the rule over each galloper and event, and you can find my complete 2023 Australia Day Cup Day Tips below.

Fujitsu General Plate (1100m) – 1:05pm AEDT
No. 4 Coriolis

Coriolis has returned a few lovely efforts since resuming this time and can break her maiden at Warwick Farm on Thursday.

The Lonhro filly finished second in each of her first two starts back from spell, and ran into a few handy ones at Canterbury last time.

She steps out this week in peak order and retains the services of James McDonald.

Drinkwise Plate (1400m) – 1:40pm AEDT
No. 9 The Englishman

The Englishman looks to have good ability, and he can win the second at Warwick Farm on Thursday.

The Tavistock gelding finished second behind Zou Tiger on debut in August and was immediately put away, and that form obviously held up.

He finished off well for fourth in a maiden here at Warwick Farm when resuming, and I am confident that he’ll take big improvement for that hit-out.

Furphy Handicap (1600m) – 2:15pm AEDT
No. 10 Gleefilly

Gleefilly broke her maiden in style at Wyong earlier this month, and she can continue her rise through the grades on Australia Day Cup Day.

The Kermadec filly has improved for each of her three starts back from a spell, culminating in the comfortable two-length triumph last time out, and she is quite clearly still learning her craft.

She’s another whose winning chances are further boosted by the booking of James McDonald, and she should receive every chance to win again from barrier 5.

best bet
Too Darn Hot First Yearlings Handicap (1200m) – 2:50pm AEDT
No. 10 Junqueira

This BM72 Handicap looks another ideal race for Junqueira.

The Capitalist filly has hardly put a hoof wrong since making her debut, recording two wins and a placing from her three career starts, highlighted by a dominant effort on the Gold Coast last time out.

Fitter third-up, I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish again, and she is my best bet on the program.

Castelvecchio First Yearlings Handicap (1400m) – 3:25pm AEDT
No. 10 Cadetship

Chris Waller holds a typically strong hand at the Australia Day Cup meeting, and Cadetship looms as a key winning chance in Race 5.

Cadetship returned with an eye-catching effort to break his maiden at Newcastle back in December, and he was last seen finishing second, beaten in a photo in BM72 company here at Warwick Farm.

With even luck, I think he’ll prove difficult to beat in something like this.

Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1000m) – 4pm AEDT
No. 14 Silvanito

Silvanito can make a winning return to the races in the sixth at Warwick Farm on Thursday.

The Shooting To Win gelding didn’t miss placing in three appearances last time in, breaking his maiden at Hawkesbury most notably, and finding form around some talented gallopers.

He’s had the benefit of a couple of trials in the lead-up to his return, and in what looks one of the more open races on the program, I think he’ll return a cheeky performance.

each way
Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) – 4:40pm AEDT
No. 1 Spirit Ridge

We were with Spirit Ridge when he won over 2000m at Flemington last time out, and the Anzac Day Cup looks a lovely feature race for him.

The veteran son of Nathaniel has improved with each of his three starts back from a spell, and was an eye-catching fourth in the Group 3 Summer Cup prior to his last-start triumph.

Getting out to a mile and a half at this point of his preparation does look to suit, and as long as he’s not feeling topweight late in the piece, I think he’ll make it two in a row.

Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m) – 5:20pm AEDT
No. 12 Ponca

Ponca has returned to the races a different horse this time in, and she can win the last on Australia Day Cup Day.

The American Pharoah filly recorded consecutive wins at Gosford and Wyong two and three starts back, and she was last seen finishing fourth, beaten a length and a half by Fashion Legend in the Vo Rogue Plate.

That horse has since come out and won the Magic Millions Guineas, and it’s the form that I want to be with in this contest.
