2022 Summer Cup Day Tips & Preview

We’re back to Royal Randwick on Boxing Day for 2022 Summer Cup Day!

Won by the likes of Ming Dynasty, Super Impose and more recently, Fierce Impact, the Summer Cup is a ‘good horses’ race, and we’re set for another exciting edition on Monday.

You can find my complete 2022 Summer Cup Day Tips below.

Drinkwise Plate (1600m) – 1:35pm AEDT
No Bet

There isn’t a lot of form to study ahead of the first at Randwick on Boxing Day and there is a case to be made for many.

I can’t find anything that I am particularly confident in and I am happy to stay out from a betting perspective, with a view towards something later in the season.

Vinery Yearlings Handicap (1400m) – 2:10pm AEDT
No. 4 The Englishman

The Englishman can make a winning return on Summer Cup Day.

The Tavistock gelding showed ability at the trials prior to debuting and worked home well to finish second behind Zou Tiger at his only competitive start.

The form out of that race obviously held up, and The Englishman has trialled well in the lead-up to this.

Ranvet Plate (1200m) – 2:45pm AEDT
No. 4 Himalaism

Himalaism has improved for two starts back from a spell and is ready to strike at Randwick on Monday.

The I Am Invincible gelding is a seven-start maiden, but he has been competitive since debuting, placing three times around some talented gallopers.

He hit the line to finish second, beaten a head at Canterbury last time out, and any improvement will see him hard to beat in something like this.

Furphy Handicap (1000m) – 3:20pm AEDT
No. 4 Zain's Girl

Zain’s Girl can make a winning return to the races in the fourth on Summer Cup Day.

The Mark Newnham-trained galloper was a consistent performer in races not dissimilar to this one throughout her last prep, winning a couple of races, and not looking out of place in Saturday metro company.

Her fresh record is excellent, and she looks to have a class edge over most of these rivals.

Microphone Yearlings Handicap (1400m) – 4pm AEDT
No. 2 Royal Merchant

Royal Merchant has recorded two wins from as many starts back from a spell, and this race looks the next logical target for her.

The Merchant Navy filly finished midfield behind Kibou at Warwick Farm on debut in June and was immediately put away, and she completed the perfect return to the races by winning at Canterbury.

She franked that effort with another eye-catching win, this time in BM64 company at Randwick-Kensington, and she is open to further improvement on Boxing Day.

Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) – 4:40pm AEDT
No. 1 Lion's Roar

Lion’s Roar was far better third-up in The Ingham, and the Summer Cup is the perfect race for him.

The Contributer gelding has been an outstanding horse for the John O’Shea yard for several seasons now, and he recorded a memorable Group 1 victory in the 2021 edition of the Randwick Guineas.

While he hasn’t quite returned to those heights, he was unlucky not to strike in Group 2 company last time out, and I am confident that he will be back to his best over the 2000m on Monday.

Kia Ora Stud Handicap (1500m) – 5:20pm AEDT
No. 9 Baranof

Baranof his a fitness edge over several key rivals in the penultimate race on Summer Cup Day and can fight out the finish.

The Hinchinbrook gelding has raced consistently this time in, winning two of his last four starts, including a BM64 contest at Hawkesbury last time out.

This is harder, but at peak fitness and at the price, we can have an each way play.

Arrowfield Group 1 Graduates Handicap (1200m) – 6pm AEDT
No. 17 My Eloise

There is a case to be made for a few of them in the last on Summer Cup Day, and I thought that My Eloise looked a winning chance at a price.

My Eloise has hinted at ability since debuting, and she made an ideal return to the races with an easy win in maiden company at Hawkesbury last month.

She followed up that performance with a credible third placing behind Fashion Legend at Gosford, and I like that she has been kept fresh for this race.
