The Winterbottom Stakes is often the standout race of the year in the nation’s west, and in my opinion, this year’s edition is absolutely no exception.
With the likes of Rothfire, Paulele and Vilana confirmed alongside a strong local contingent, the 2022 Winterbottom Stakes field is dripping with talent, and it subsequently looms as a terrific betting contest.

I’ve been with him all year and finally, I am confident that Paulele will record the first Group 1 victory of his career in the Winterbottom Stakes.
Paulele has been an outstanding horse for Godolphin since making his debut. He is a multiple Stakes winner, a multiple Group 1 placegetter and unlucky not to strike at the highest level this year.
His last couple of starts haven’t been his best, but a repeat of his tough effort and win in the Schillaci Stakes on Caulfield Guineas Day would probably be enough here, and the booking of Ben Melham is positive.
Rothfire is another East Coast raider whom I wouldn’t be surprises to see in the 2022 Winterbottom Stakes winner’s stall.
His two-year-old season was almost faultless and concluded with his first (and only) win at the highest level in the JJ Atkins.
His subsequent career has been injury-riddled, but he has returned to the races in excellent condition this time, winning the McEwen Stakes and finishing second behind Bella Nipotina in the Manikato Stakes most notably.
Trainer Rob Heathcote has previously tasted Winterbottom Stakes success with Buffering, and Rothfire is a big chance of returning the stable another feature win this week.
2020 Winterbottom Stakes winner Elite Street will take plenty of improvement into his second campaign start and is drawn to receive every chance from barrier 7.
The Street Boss gelding’s only miss last summer came in this race; a still credible third placing, and he returned in late autumn for consecutive wins in Group 3 company.
He clearly wasn’t fully wound up when finishing fourth, beaten more than three lengths in the Colonel Reeves Stakes, but his second-up record is outstanding, and Brad Rawiller knows him like the back of his hand.
The Hunter winner Vilana hardly knows how to run a bad race, and he too can fight out the finish of the Winterbottom Stakes under Jamie Kah.
The Hallowed Crown entire has recorded a career total of six wins and a placing from just ten starts, but it is fair to say that he has gone to another level this time, and was also an eye-catching winner of the Silver Eagle when resuming.
He takes his place in the Winterbottom Stakes field at full fitness and does look up to something of this quality.
