2022 Five Diamonds Day Tips & Preview

2022 Five Diamonds Day Tips & Preview

$2 million goes on the line in Saturday’s feature race at Rosehill Gardens – the Five Diamonds!

For the first time in a long time, a track rated in the ‘Good’ range is expected in Sydney, and with that in mind, you can find my complete 2022 Five Diamonds Day Tips below.

Midway Handicap (1300m) – 12:25pm AEDT
No. 9 Verbek

At publish, we’re looking at $5 the field in this week’s Midway Handicap and certainly not the easiest way to begin the day from a betting perspective.

That being said, Verbek has been a consistent performer this time and we can have an each-way play at around the $6 mark.

Verbek only just missed in a Midway race here at Rosehill in September, and he has been freshened since an unplaced effort at Newcastle.

Tommy Berry rides from a good gate and horse is treated well at the weights.

Highway Handicap (1400m) – 1pm AEDT
No. 5 Sir Ravanelli

Sir Ravanelli has opened our market favourite in this week’s Highway Handicap, and I am confident that he will justify the quote.

The Iffraaj gelding has been a model of consistency this year and hasn’t missed placing at his last five appearances.

I thought that he was good when third, beaten just over a length in a similar race here last week and I like that he is on the short back-up.

Chandon Handicap (2400m) – 1:35pm AEDT
No. 3 King Frankel

This looks the perfect opportunity for King Frankel to successfully transition into Saturday metro company.

The son of Frankel has been excellent this time in, winning two of three and beating home some good rivals at the midweeks.

His form on a good track is great, he takes his place in this race in peak order and he is drawn to receive every chance once again.

Quayclean Handicap (1800m) – 2:10pm AEDT
No. 7 Naval Seal

Naval Seal only just missed when resuming and can go one better in the fourth on Five Diamonds Day.

The Chris Waller-trained galloper has been a consistent performer since making his debut, but I thought that his resuming effort over a mile hinted at improvement.

He has plenty of upside and William Pike retains the ride this week.

Furphy Handicap (1200m) – 2:50pm AEDT
No. 5 Devil's Throat

I thought that this looked a really nice race for Devil’s Throat.

Devil’s Throat returned a winner on the Kensington course at Randwick back in August and has had two spaced runs since; finishing down the order behind Brigantine in September before working home well to finish fourth, beaten half a length in BM78 company last time.

A lot of these horses are genuine midweekers and I think that Sam Clipperton will get the best from this bloke, this week.

each way
Golden Gift (1100m) – 3:30pm AEDT
No. 9 Razors

The Golden Gift is always a wide-open contest and there is a case to be made for many of them this year, including Razors.

Razors raced greenly on debut in the Kirkham Plate and finished seventh behind stable mare Barber, but I am confident that he’ll improve for that experience, and it puts him ahead of a number of these.

At around the $16 mark (at publish), we can have an each-way play.

Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) – 4:10pm AEDT
No. 3 Jamaea

Jamaea finally gets back onto a good track this week and I’m keen to have an each-way play at her current price ($12 at publish).

Jamaea is a multiple Stakes winner, and she has performed admirably around some of the best sprinters in the world.

She’s run into plenty of wet tracks this time and really doesn’t enjoy them, but back on top of the ground this week, I rate her an excellent chance of knocking off the favourite, Electric Girl, and the rest of them.

Five Diamonds (1800m) – 4:50pm AEDT
No. 4 Ayrton

This another lucrative pop-up race, and $2 million will go on the line in the Five Diamonds – an 1800m set weights plus penalties race that is restricted to five-year-olds.

Ellsberg was last seen dead heating the Epsom Handicap, but Ayrton is the one for me at Five Diamonds odds of $8 (at publish).

Ayrton is yet to live up to the Group 1 potential that was hinted during his three-year-old prep, but he rarely runs a bad race, and he’s certainly up to something like this.

If Sam Clipperton can get him into a nice spot in running, he’ll prove extremely difficult to hold out again.

Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m) – 5:25pm AEDT
No. 4 I Am Me

I Am Me hasn’t been seen at the races since June, but her fresh record is excellent, and this looks a lovely launchpad for her.

The I Am Invincible mare resumed for three-consecutive wins in autumn of this year, and she wasn’t disgraced in a couple of black type races at the backend of her prep.

She’s had the benefit of a trial in the lead-up to her return and is yet to miss placing at this point of her prep.

best bet
Ranvet Handicap (1400m) – 6:05pm AEDT
No. 4 Bella Rouge

Bella Rouge is my best bet on 2022 Five Diamonds Day.

The talented mare clearly needed her first run back when seventh, beaten nearly three lengths at Randwick a fortnight ago, but she is a horse that tends to enjoy sharp improvement with one under her belt.

She returned some excellent performances last time in, she looks the class runner of this field and with even luck, she can return to winning form.
