2022 The Golden Eagle Tips

The Golden Eagle has quickly taken a headline role on the Sydney Spring Carnival calendar, and we’ll be treated to another outstanding edition of the $10 million feature at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

With the three previous editions of The Golden Eagle claimed by Kolding, Colette and I’m Thunderstruck, it really was a ‘good horses’ race’ from the get-go.

Which talented four-year-old will join the winner’s list this weekend? Read on to my 2022 The Golden Eagle Tips to find out who I think it will be!

  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
The Golden Eagle - Winner
No. 5 I Wish I Win

I’m sticking with talented import I Wish I Win when he takes his place in The Golden Eagle field.

I Wish I Win was Group 1 performed in New Zealand prior to transferring to the care of Peter Moody this time, and he put the writing on the wall with a dominant win over 1400m at Caulfield in August.

He repeated that effort with another stunning win in the Testa Rossa Stakes, before finishing fifth in the Toorak Handicap last time out.

I am happy to put a line through his Toorak run – it was still decent, despite him getting worked up and vetted at the barriers, and he steps out this week in peak order.

With even luck, I think he’ll be extremely difficult to hold out again.

The Golden Eagle - 2nd
No. 12 Light Infantry

Light Infantry’s European form is outstanding, and he could very well be the first international to win The Golden Eagle.

Now in the care of Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, Light Infantry stamped himself as one to follow by winning his first two career starts, including the Group 3 Horris Hill at Newbury in the UK.

His two most recent performances have also been excellent, and saw him finishing second on both occasions in Group 1 races in France.

He clearly has the ability, it’s just a matter of whether or not he brings it to his first Australian start!

The Golden Eagle - 3rd
No. 16 Chain Of Lightning

The Moody stable will launch an outstanding two-pronged attack in The Golden Eagle, and I am also keen to have Chain Of Lightning in my numbers.

Chain Of Lightning has hardly put a hoof wrong since debuting, and won each of her first five career starts, including the Group 3 Cockram Stakes back in August.

She suffered her first career defeat when third in the How Now Stakes, but she bounced back with another dominant performance in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes last time out, and quality hoop Jamie Kah will travel to Sydney this weekend to ride her.

The Golden Eagle - 4th
No. 13 Welwal

Another intriguing European import confirmed in The Golden Eagle field is Welwal.

Welwal has recorded three wins and a further two second placings from his seven career starts tp date, highlighted by a lovely win in Group 3 company over a mile in France.

He has been transferred to the care of the Chris Waller stable this time, which is obviously a big tick, and he’s had the benefit of a couple of trials leading up to The Golden Eagle.

Popular UK-based jockey Frankie Dettori has travelled to Australia to ride, and Welwal’s best form would see him into the finish as well.
