The journey towards The Metropolitan kicks off provincially on Friday with the running of the Listed Wyong Gold Cup.
Won by some outstanding gallopers throughout its storied existence, the Wyong Gold Cup boasts a $200K purse and has drawn a typically smart field in 2022.

Suggested Bets
- 2 Units straight out #5 Toomuchtobear
- Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
I’m not entirely convinced that Toomuchtobear is up to Group 1 company, but a race like the Wyong Gold Cup certainly looks to be within his abilities.
Toomuchtobear has been a consistent performer throughout his career, and he has returned to the races in decent touch this time.
Having finished second behind Cross Talk in the Winter Challenge two back, I thought that he was excellent when sixth, beaten a little over a length in the Premier’s Cup last time out.
He takes his place in this race in peak order and the conditions look ideal.
The consistent Lord Ardmore will take his place in the Wyong Gold Cup field and rates as a key winning chance again, I’m just a little concerned about him having to carry topweight.
The Reliable Man gelding stamped himself as one to follow this time with an eye-catching run for second in BM94 company first-up at Randwick, and he franked that effort with consecutive wins in Saturday metro company.
He too was good in the Premier’s Cup last time out, and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish.
The consistent Grove Ferry will take his place in the Wyong Gold Cup field and can fight out the finish again.
The Excelebration gelding did fall out of form a little in the winter, but was freshened and only just missed in the Premier’s Cup Prelude at Randwick earlier last month.
He followed up that performance with another good on for fourth in the Premier’s Cup, and he too looks as though he is in peak order for Friday’s feature race.
I really rate Chalk Stream’s chances of winning the Wyong Gold Cup, but he’s a dual acceptor with the Tattersall’s Club Cup at Randwick on Saturday, and I think that’s probably the way that Chris Waller will go with him.
The Sea The Stars gelding has been a great horse for Her Majesty The Queen throughout his career and was decent during his first Australian prep; running third in a Group 3 stayers race most notably.
He didn’t show a lot in the Premier’s Cup first-up, but he is a horse who tends to enjoy good improvement with a run under his belt, and the rise in trip obviously suits.
