2022 The Rosebud Day Tips & Preview

Things continue to heat up at Rosehill Gardens on The Rosebud Day!

The first Group 1 of the new season is now only one week away, and I’m eager to build a Spring Carnival bank with my The Rosebud Day Tips below.

each way
Highway Handicap (1300m) – 11:20am
No. 10 Warrah Flash

This week’s Highway race is a wide-open affair and at publish, we’re faced with $5 the field.

Warrah Flash was scratched from a weaker race at Tamworth on Friday to instead contest this race, and he does look over the odds at around the $31 mark.

While Warrah Flash doesn’t win out of turn, he rarely races poorly and has placed in three of five back from a spell.

He gets some relief in the weights this week and we can have a small each-way play at the big quote.

Dooleys Handicap (1300m) – 11:55am
No. 2 True Crime

True Crime has hardly put a hoof wrong since debuting, and this looks another great winning opportunity for him.

The Kim Waugh-trained gelding was a smart winner on debut at Gosford back in June, and has since finished second in an 1100m handicap at Randwick and won a similar race last time.

He steps out this week in peak order and Nash Rawiller should receive every chance in running.

Midway Handicap (1400m) – 12:30pm
No. 1 Oxford Tycoon

This is another wide-open affair and $6 the field, at publish.

Oxford Tycoon finally returned to winning form at the midweeks last time out and this does looks the next logical step for him.

It had been a while between drinks for the Written Tycoon gelding, but he was rewarded for his condition with an easy triumph in BM72 company earlier this month.

He’s rock-hard fit and another whom we can have something on each-way ($12 at publish).

Cabramatta Bowling Club Handicap (1200m) – 1:05pm
No. 6 Conscript

Conscript has bucketloads of ability, and he looms as the one to beat again in Race 4 on The Rosebud Day.

Conscript returned to the races with a nice effort to finish second behind an impressive Hulk at Randwick in late June, and he took plenty of improvement into a classy win in a similar contest last time out.

Fitter third-up, he’ll relish the small rise in trip and can win again.

Campbelltown Catholic Club Handicap (1400m) – 1:40pm
No. 5 Frumos

Frumos puts an unbeaten record on the line at Rosehill on Saturday, and I’m going to keep following her until she gives me a reason not to.

Frumos stamped herself as one to watch with a dominant four-length win on debut in maiden company at Newcastle, and has since franked that performance with another two easy victories in tougher races.

I like that she has been kept up to the mark with a trial since her most recent appearance, and I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish again.

Bankstown Sports Handicap (1400m) – 2:15pm
No. 1 Mugatoo

Mugatoo makes his eagerly awaited return in what shapes as a very winnable race for him at Rosehill on The Rosebud Day.

The Henrythenavigator gelding has been nothing short of outstanding since arriving in Australia and into the care of Kris Lees, and of course his career is highlighted by an outstanding win in the 2021 All-Star Mile.

He hasn’t been seen at the races for more than a year, but his recent trials have been good, and this looks an ideal launchpad for him.

Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Handicap (1800m) – 2:55pm
No. 5 Lovely Esteem

Lovely Esteem has improved with each of her three starts back this time and is ready to win on The Rosebud Day.

The former Irish mare wasn’t disgraced in some decent black type races earlier in her career, but needed her first run in Australia to tune-up; finishing down the order here at Rosehill in June.

She’s since filled the minors in a pair of Saturday metro races, and she really does look to be suited to this one right down to the ground.

Listed The Rosebud (1100m) – 3:35pm
No. 1 Sebonack

The traditional path towards the Golden Rose kicks off with a decent edition of The Rosebud, and Sebonack is the one that I want to be with.

Sebonack made just three appearances during his two-year-old prep, but won the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes on debut before finishing fourth in the Neds Blue Diamond, most notably.

A couple of recent trials suggested that he is ready to go, and I’m confident that he will make a winning return.

ClubsNSW Handicap (1400m) – 4:15pm
No. 7 Kalino

Kalino is another justifiable market favourite whom I’m keen to stick with on Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding has managed to strike only once in four starts back from a spell, but that victory was very impressive, and he was luckless intro fourth here a fortnight ago.

I think he’ll take plenty of improvement for that effort and his winning claims have been further boosted by the booking of James McDonald.

Guildford Leagues Handicap (1100m) – 4:55pm
No Bet

Shades Of The Rose has opened a $1.60 favourite in betting ahead of the last on The Rosebud Day.

The Rubick mare was a dominant third-up winner of a similar race here at Rosehill last time out, and I think that she will probably just win again.

That being said, the price is far too short for me, and I am happy to pull stumps after the ninth.
