2022 Winter Stakes Day Tips & Preview

The weather has remained at a low in Sydney this week, and Winter Stakes Day at Royal Randwick is set to be a wet one!

With that in mind, I’ve kept my eye out for mudlarks, and you can find my complete 2022 Winter Stakes Day Tips below.

Home Affairs At Coolmore Handicap (1100m) – 11am
No 9 Troach

Not the easiest way to start that day from a betting perspective and at publish, we’re faced with $6 the field.

Troach hasn’t been seen at the races since March, but this is a drop in class for her, and she broke her maiden when resuming last time.

The Epaulette filly displayed talent, and she raced well around some quality fillies in black type company.

Highway Handicap (1400m) – 11:35am
No. 2 Pure Fuego

Pure Fuego can bounce back third-up at Randwick on Saturday.

The Cameron Crockett-trained galloper ran home well to fill the minors at Rosehill when resuming, and he was absolutely luckless in a similar contest last time out.

He gets some relief in the weights under Tyle Schiller and is drawn to receive a lovely run from barrier 7.

Grainshaker Vodka Handicap (1400m) – 12:10pm
No. 3 And We Danced

I’m going to give And We Danced one last chance to strike at Randwick on Saturday.

The Kiwi import has been a consistent performer since arriving in Australia, but hasn’t won in some time now; placing in four of five starts for the Waller camp.

She steps out this week six weeks between starts and might not be offered a better opportunity to win in Saturday metro company.

Chandon Handicap (2000m) – 12:45pm
No. 7 Tinnie Winnie

Tinnie Winnie is another galloper that looks well placed to strike for Chris Waller on Winter Stakes Day.

The So You Think mare returned with consecutive wins at Canterbury before finishing fourth, though well beaten by the likes of Born A King at Rosehill last time out.

She takes her place in this contest in peak order, the 2000m is ideal and I think that she is a touch of overs at around the $6 mark.

Midway Handicap (1600m) – 1:20pm
No. 13 Tympanist

These Midway Handicap are almost always wide-open affairs, and there’s a case to be made for a few of them again this week, including Tympanist.

Tympanist has improved with racing recently, and she takes her place in this contest following a close-up second behind Kalino at this track and distance.

She looks to be at peak fitness for Saturday, she gets into the race well and we can have an each-way play at current odds.

each way
Precise Air Handicap (1100m) – 1:55pm
No. 7 Saquon

I thought that this looked a very winnable race for Saquon.

Saquan has been a good horse for the Paul Perry yard since making his debut, picking off a few races not dissimilar to this one.

He does mix his form a little, but a repeat of his first-up effort and win here at Randwick in late May would see him into the finish, and jockey Keagan Latham has options from the rails draw.

best bet
Bowermans Handicap (1200m) – 2:35pm
No. 11 Waihaha Falls

Waihaha Falls was an impressive winner first-up from a spell, and he will only improve at Randwick on Saturday.

The four-year-old son of Sacred Falls was a consistent performer last time in, but produced a career-best effort to score by more than three lengths last month.

He is a winner at this point of his prep previously and he is my best bet of the day.

Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) – 3:15pm
No. 12 Jojo Was A Man

This is a strong edition of the Winter Stakes and Taksu has opened a justifiable favourite in betting.

That being said, I’ve been very impressed by what Jojo Was A Man has produced this time in, and I think that this is the perfect bit of black type for him.

Jojo Was A Man has recorded three wins from four starts back this time, and he is seeking a hat-trick on Saturday following consecutive Saturday metro wins.

He’s drawn ideally, weighted well and steps out in peak order.

each way
Schweppes Handicap (1100m) – 3:55pm
No. 14 Sugartown

I thought that Victorian raider Sugartown was an intriguing runner in the penultimate race on Winter Stakes Day, and she looks a bit of value at around the $11 mark.

The Danny O’Brien-trained mare only just missed at Cranbourne when resuming this time and finished third, beaten half a length at Sandown last time out.

Fitter third-up, she’s another who gets into her race well under the conditions this week, and she has been competitive on heavy going previously.

Ranvet Handicap (1400m) – 4:30pm
No. 7 Cross Talk

Cross Talk seemingly doesn’t know how to run a bad race, and he’s the one that I want to be with in the last.

The Waterhouse & Bott-trained gelding has recorded three wins and two minors from his rivals career starts so far, and he finished only half a length behind Jojo Is A Man last time out.

Given that I have that galloper on top of my Winter Stakes Tips, I think that the form is right.
