2022 Winter Cup Day Tips & Preview

The Listed Winter Cup headlines another exciting ten-race program at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

With ten winners to be found, I’ve dug deep into the form of every single galloper engaged, and you can find my Winter Cup Day Tips below.

Bowermans Handicap (1300m) – 11am
No. 1 Baroque Road

Baroque Road recorded a lovely win on debut, and he can keep alive his unbeaten record in the first at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Caravaggio gelding showed ability at the trials prior to debuting and put the writing on the wall with a near four-length win on the Kensington course at Randwick last month.

He’ll only improve for that experience and this is the next logical step.

Highway Handicap (1100m) – 11:35am
No. 4 Comonic

Comonic take winning form into his second campaign start, and he’s the one that I want to be with in this week’s Highway race.

The Nicconi gelding hasn’t returned a poor effort since debuting, placing at his first two career starts and winning each of his two most recent.

His resuming effort at Hawkesbury was the best of his career so far, and something like this looks well within his grasp.

The Agency Handicap (1800m) – 12:10pm
No. 4 African Daisy

There’s a case to be made for a few gallopers in the third in Sydney on Saturday, including African Daisy.

The Annabel Neasham-trained filly returned a winner at Wyong in late April, greeting the judge more than five lengths ahead of her rivals, and she was last seen finishing second in Class 1 company during the Scone Carnival.

Fitter third-up, she can return to winning form.

Midway Handicap (1400m) – 12:45pm
No. 19 Showtime Lady

She is yet to gain a start as the race’s third emergency, but I am going to have something on Showtime Lady if she does fight into the field.

Showtime Lady returned some nice efforts last time in, and returned an impressive winner at Gosford in early May.

She is another runner who should only improve this week, and she gets into the race well under the conditions.

Listed Winter Cup (2400m) – 1:20pm
No Bet

As has been the case several times in recent years, the feature race has drawn a reasonably small field, but all of your usual suspects in staying races as this point of the season are engaged.

Military Mission has opened a $1.65 favourite in Winter Cup betting, and I do think that he will take a power of beating.

That quote is too short me for, however, and I am going to stay out.

Farewell Nevesh Ramdhani Handicap (1400m) – 1:55pm
No. 5 Niffler

Niffler can return to winning form on Winter Cup Day.

The Chris Waller-trained mare hasn’t returned a poor effort since debuting, winning three and placing four times in seven career starts.

She kept all of her best work for late when second behind Ita at the midweeks last month, and she too will take plenty of improvement into Saturday.

Petaluma Handicap (1800m) – 2:30pm
No. 3 Surf Dancer

Surf Dancer has improved for two starts back this time, and I think that this looks the perfect opportunity for him to strike.

The European import has returned plenty of strong performances since arriving in Australia, and he has raced well around some above-average gallopers this time in.

He was denied by a nose over 1500m here at Rosehill a fortnight ago, and he will relish getting out to 1800m this week.

Schweppes Handicap (1200m) – 3:05pm
No. 8 Per Inaway

Per Inaway hasn’t been seen at the races since March, but her fresh record is excellent, and this looks a lovely launchpad for her.

Her overall record is, in fact, excellent and including two wins and two placings from just four starts.

This will be her first start in Australia, but anything close to the form that she showed at the beginning of her career would see her into the finish.

Ranvet Handicap (1500m) – 3:40pm
No. 1 Night Of Thunder

He will require some luck in running after drawing awkwardly, but Night Of Power was an impressive winner second-up, and he can strike again on Saturday.

The seven-year-old gelding finished fourth, beaten just over two lengths at Hawkesbury when resuming, but powered home to finish over the top of Quintello here a fortnight ago.

He is open to further improvement, gets some relief in the weights under Dylan Gibbons and is proven on the heavy going.

each way
Canadian Club Handicap (1200m) – 4:20pm
No. 1 Kingsheir

Another tough end to the meeting and at publish, we’re faced with $6 the field.

Kingsheir has had yet another stable change and will saddle up for Kim Waugh for the first time this week, at a lovely price ($12 at publish).

The Kingman gelding has picked off several races not dissimilar to this one in preps for the Hawkes and the Waller camps, and he’s another who will get some relief in the weights this week.

We can have an each-way play at the price.
