A-League Men Elimination Finals Tips & Preview

A-League Men Elimination Finals Tips & Preview

Here we go, the regular season is done and six teams now have a chance at being crowned A-League champions.

It gets underway this weekend with a pair of win or go home Elimination Finals while Melbourne City and Victory enjoy a hard earned bye.

Every club left will feel like they have a legitimate shot at lifting the toilet seat trophy on May 28 and based on the unpredictability of the league this season, they all do.

There is never a shortage of drama in finals football with some of the best moments in A-League history coming in these games.

We’ve found some value in our A-League Finals markets so check out our match previews and best bets.

Western United v Wellington Phoenix
SGM: Wellington to Win (90 Minutes) and Both Teams to Score @ $6.45

Playing in this match might feel like a bit of a disappointment for a Western United side who were in the hunt for the premiership right up until their final match of the season.

Two defeats and a draw in their final three games consigned John Aloisi’s men to third place behind their Victorian compatriots which is also not the form line you want to be bringing to a fixture like this.

Wellington has done it the hard way all season long, playing out of a hub for most of the last two seasons but Ufuk Talay has done a remarkable job managing this side and keeping them competitive all season long.

It has not been without its bumps along the way but they have picked up the results they needed.

Working in the visitor’s favour is the fact that they have had the better of their matchups with Western United, claiming all three meetings this season, most recently a 4-1 win in Ballarat.

The only concern for the Nix is how much they have left in the tank after a draining campaign and will Western United be out to re-establish their title credentials.

There is not as much disparity between these sides as the match result market would have you believe and the Nix are an excellent value play.

Adelaide United v Central Coast Mariners
Draw (90 Minutes) @ $3.50

We’ve got the two most in form teams in the A-League going head to head in the second elimination final and both will not let their ladder position dictate their fate over the next fortnight.

Having each won their last five matches, both clubs will feel like they are legitimate title contenders if they play to their best.

The Reds started off slowly, but the addition of Craig Goodwin turned their attack around, providing a real spark as he contributed with both goals and assists.

It took six matches for them to get a win and their streaky results did occasionally leave them on the outside of the finals picture, when it mattered most they were able to produce what was needed.

Central Coast on the other hand continued to be the little engine that could, having shown that their breakout campaign last year was not a fluke, they went toe to toe with every opponent proving their mettle.

There are few sides that can match them in terms of results since the start of March with just one loss from their last 14 outings.

It all sets up a delectable contest at Coopers Stadium, a venue that has produced its share of wild footballing memories.

Home field advantage has been huge in this matchup, with the last six games won by the hosts on the day.

It’s not the most entertaining pick, but both clubs have proven to be adept at playing knockout football with the respective runs in the cup and a draw after 90 minutes seems like the way to go.
