Four Group 1 races will be contested at Flemington on Derby Day, and the program’s namesake has drawn a capacity field of three-year-old stayers.
The Victoria Derby has been won by some of Australasia’s greatest-ever gallopers during its storied existence, and the likes of Gunstock, Forgot You and Alegron will seek their own page in the history books on Saturday afternoon.
I’ve dug deep into the form of every galloper engaged, and you can find my complete 2021 Victoria Derby Tips below.
- 4 Units straight out #1 Forgot You
- Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
Forgot You has been excellent since resuming and he reaches his Grand Final in the 2021 Victoria Derby.
The Savabeel colt finished third, beaten half a length here at HQ when resuming before recording consecutive wins at The Valley second and third-up, the latter in Group 2 company.
He has since finished a credible sixth in the Neds Caulfield Guineas and charged in to score an eye-catching win in last weekend’s Group 2 Vase.
Getting out to 2500m at this point of his prep looks idea, the stable knows how to saddle at Derby winner and he is drawn to receive a lovely run.
Kiwi raider Tutukaka has found form at the perfect moment for a strong showing in the Victoria Derby 2021.
The Tavistock gelding arrived in Australia in winter and won the Listed Tatts Stakes at Eagle Farm at just his fourth career start.
He has improved for each of his three starts back this time and as he has gotten further out in trip, culminating in an impressive win in last Wednesday’s Geelong Classic.
James McDonald jumps into the saddle for his Derby tilt, and I for one wouldn’t be surprised to see him become the first horse since Preferment to come out of the Geelong Classic and win the Derby.
James Cummings and Godolphin have another quality galloper on their hands with Alegron, and I think that the horse can and will return another strong performance in the Victoria Derby.
Alegron broke his maiden with ease at Newcastle when resuming in August, and he is another galloper who has continued to improve as the bar has been raised, highlighted by his third placing behind Profondo in the Spring Champion Stakes last time.
Getting further out in trip looks as though it will suit at this point of his prep and with even luck, he’ll be there abouts again.
Gunstock has opened our favourite in 2021 Victoria Derby betting, but he has also drawn the carpark and will need everything to go right.
The Tavistock colt has made just four appearances at the races so far, but he has been outstanding, winning twice and filling the minors on another occasion.
He truly stamped himself as a runner to follow when comfortably taking out the Group 3 Neds Classic at Caulfield a fortnight ago, but he will need to go to another level to win again on Saturday.
