It was rained out last weekend but the Sunshine Coast wouldn’t be denied their biggest day of the year, and we are set for the rescheduled 2021 Caloundra Cup Day at Corbould Park on Sunday!
Nine races will be contested in total and you can find my revised 2021 Caloundra Cup Day Tips below.
Warp Speed can record another win in the first on Caloundra Cup Day.
He ran home well to finish second behind Orbisyn when resuming at Doomben and converted that hit out into an impressive win over a mile in town last time.
Fitter third-up and under the conditions of this race, he can score again.
Mishani Miss hasn’t been seen at the races since March, but she races well fresh, and she has typically run into tougher company than this throughout her career.
The Denman filly raced well around the likes of Rothfire and Kisukano during her two-year-old season and finished eighth, beaten only two and a half lengths by Jonker in the Magic Millions Sprint last prep.
Her best would see her beating these comfortably, and we can have a genuine each-way play at around the $10 mark.
This race always draws a classy field of two-year-olds and there is absolutely no exception to that rule in 2021.
Miss Hipstar has been freshened since finishing down the order in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce, and I think she’ll take a power of beating.
The Star Turn filly stamped herself as a runner to watch during her summer prep, and returned to the races with an impressive effort to win the Listed Dalrello Stakes in May.
A repeat of that would see her right into the finish of this race.
Jami Lady needed the run when she finished sixth, beaten four lengths at Doomben when fresh but I’m anticipating plenty of improvement, and I think that she can win on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
The Spirit Of Boom mare was outstanding through last year’s Winter Carnival and won at Listed level most notably.
She didn’t quite reach the same heights in summer, but was kept to strong races, and something like this is still well and truly within her abilities.
It has lost some of its depth and the field isn’t as big, but we’ll still be treated to a competitive edition of the Caloundra Cup, and I’m still eager to stick with Wu Gok.
Wu Gok hasn’t shown his best for this time in, but he grows another leg on the heavy going, and is genuinely one of the country’s most destructive stayers under the conditions.
He’s rock-hard fit, drawn to receive a lovely run and I am more than happy to give him another chance.
This is one of the more open races on the card and I’m going to have a small each-way bet on Fuji Flyer.
Fuji Flyer has returned to the races in typically competitive form this time, and he recorded a lovely win in weaker company at Beaudesert when fresh, and has continued to perform as the bar has been raised.
Under Michael Cahill, I think he can run another cheeky race.
The Winx Guineas has become a key form race for milers entering their four-year-old season and has been won by the likes of its namesake, Crack Me Up, Tivaci and The Bostonian in recent seasons.
Who will join that outstanding list on Sunday? I think it will be Our Playboy.
Our Playboy has had three starts since arriving in Brisbane and while he is yet to run into the placings, he has improved noticeably with each, and was only a length behind the undefeated Palaisipan at Ipswich last time.
I think that further improvement will see him turn the tables on that runner, and we can have another each-way play at the price.
This is the strongest edition of the Glasshouse Handicap in recent memory, but I think that King Of Hastings is ready to peak and will be tough to beat.
King Of Hastings has been an above average galloper since debuting as a two-year-old, and he has picked off plenty of nice races along the way.
So far this time, he has finished sixth in the Hinkler Handicap and fourth in the Healy Stakes, and he strikes this race in perfect time to win.
This shapes as another very winnable race for East Asia.
East Asia has been a great horse for the Heathcote stable since making her debut, and she has found form around some quality gallopers this time, finishing a credible fifth in the Listed Spear Chief Quality two starts back before returning to winning form at Doomben last time.
She’s rock-hard fit and I am happy to stick with her.
