Spain look well placed to progress past Croatia when the two nations meet in the Round of 16 early on Tuesday morning AEST.
Spain were slow from the blocks, particularly by their lofty standards, and drew with both Sweden and Poland, before hitting their straps and putting on a clinic against Slovakia most recently.
Croatia were unlucky to lose to England on Matchday 1, but drew with the Czechs and proved too good for Scotland, to ultimately finish second in Group D.
This is quite clearly their toughest task to date, and nothing less than the form that saw them into the World Cup Final would be enough to topple Spain.
The second match on Tuesday morning will see Euro 2020 powerhouse France take on Switzerland.
France began Euro 2020 as favourites in tournament betting, and while they probably haven’t been nearly as dominant as many pundits expected, they’ve still quite clearly been in the top echelon of nations.
They are a side who tend to improve as competitions progress, and I have a feeling that they might really made a statement at the expense of the Swiss.
We typically always know what to expect of Switzerland: they’ll do enough to survive the pool stage, but they just lack the talent and depth of several other European nations, and every match from here on in will be difficult.
