We’re only weeks away from Group 1 racing returning to South Australia and things continue to heat up on Port Adelaide Guineas Day this weekend!
I’ve run the rule over every runner and race, and you can find my 2021 Port Adelaide Guineas Day tips below.
Wilmot Pass has improved for two starts back from a spell and can strike on Port Adelaide Guineas Day.
The Rubick gelding found form around some quality gallopers last time in, but needed the run when he finished down the order down the straight at Flemington when resuming.
He returned a far better performance for fourth in the Sale Sprint last time out and this looks an ideal Saturday race for him.
Sky Horse is another horse that has continued to improve with each start back this time, and who has genuine winning claims at Morphettville on Saturday.
The Tavistock mare finished three lengths off the pace of Silent Sovereign when resuming at Caulfield, running fifth in BM64 company and filling the minors over 2040m at The Valley last time.
The form out of that race has been good and I’m happy to back this mare this week.
Highly Discreet looks well placed to return to winning form at Morphettville this week.
The Phillip Stokes-trained galloper stripped returned a fair effort to finish fifth behind Macroura in the Typhoon Tracy Stakes when resuming and was last seen finishing second behind Echoes In Eternity at this track and distance.
Fitter third-up, the $4.60 we’re getting for her at publish looks a touch of overs.
James Cummings and Godolphin hold a strong hand in this year’s Dequetteville Stakes and I’m confident that Translation is the runner to beat.
Translation has made three trips to the races for competitive efforts at Sandown and Flemington, and she was last seen breaking her maiden in style at Cranbourne.
This is harder, but she has plenty of ability, and it looks the perfect black type target for her.
Robe Bay has opened a warm favourite in Race 5, and I think that it looks a lovely race for her.
The Atomic mare returned some nice efforts last time in, highlighted by a lovely win in the Mortlake Cup, and she resumed this time to finish a credible fourth, beaten just over a length by The Stylist in the Gold Bracelet at Bendigo.
This is a drop in class from that race and she harbours plenty of improvement.
Reynolds will take winning form into the sixth on Port Adelaide Guineas Day and looks well placed to make it two in a row.
Reynolds raced only fairly in Hong Kong during his last preparation in the middle of 2020, but he immediately announced himself to the Australian fraternity when a dominant winner at Oakbank last week.
He’ll strip fitter from that effort and can continue his rise through the grades.
This is an excellent edition of the Port Adelaide Guineas and there are several winning chances engaged, including Ecumenical.
Ecumenical has been the stable start for Richard Huxtable since making her debuting, and she raced well amongst the country’s best three-year-old fillies during the spring.
She needed the run when seventh in a 1200m handicap when resuming last month, but returned a tough effort to win the Listed Clare Lindop Stakes last time, and she’ll only improve for that effort and getting out to 1800m.
This is one of the tougher races to analyse at Morphettville on Saturday and there’s a case to be made for plenty, but I’m going to hold firm with the Macdonald and Gluyas-trained Midnight Storm.
Midnight Storm hasn’t run a bad race since resuming, finishing second at each of his first three before breaking back into the winner’s stall in BM68 company last time out.
This represents a similar task for him, and he’ll get some relief in the weights with Stacey Metcalfe aboard.
We’re faced with around $5 the field in the last on Port Adelaide Guineas Day and with several winning chances engaged, I’m going to have a nibble on one at a price: Narrative Star ($26 at publish).
Narrative Star has had three starts back this time, winning at Gawler when fresh and returned competitive efforts in two starts at BM60 level here at Morphettville.
She gets into this race well under the conditions and we can have a genuine each-way play.
