Dustin Poirier avenged his loss to Conor McGregor in 2014 with a second round TKO win at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi on the weekend.
The 32 year old made his debut in the UFC on New Year’s Day in 2011 and has been a regular in the Top 10 of the Lightweight Division since making the move from Featherweight after his loss to McGregor.
The Louisiana local has shot to stardom in recent years, winning the UFC Interim Lightweight Title against Max Holloway before losing to the recently retired Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed title back in September 2019.
Here are 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Dustin Poirier.
1. He Is Of Acadian Descent
Poirier was born on January 19, 1989 in Lafayette, Louisiana and is of Acadian, French descent.
The Acadians are the descendants of the French who settled in northeastern North America, which includes Quebec, the Maritime provinces and Maine during the 17th and 18th century.
More specifically he is from Cajun heritage who mainly resided in the U.S states of Louisiana and Texas.
2. He Dropped Out Of High School In Grade 9
The former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion never made it past Grade 9 at Northside High School.
Street fighting was rumoured as the main reason he decided to call it quits.
Seemed to work out for him.
3. He Was In A Critically Acclaimed Documentary
The 2011 documentary is described as “A documentary that focuses on a group of young athletes in southern Louisiana as they work toward achieving their goals of becoming professional mixed martial arts fighters.”
It follows a young Dustin Poirier in his bid to gain a UFC contract and is an eye opening account of what it takes for young fighters working their way through the amateur fight scene.

4. He Is Married To His Childhood Sweetheart
Dustin Poirier met his wife, Jolie, when they were just teenagers and are now married with one child, a daughter named Parker Noelle.
They were married in 2009, before Dustin entered the UFC.
Jolie is a philanthropist who is the Vice President and Director of The Good Foundation.
Her salary is reported to be $100k and she is worth $1 million.
5. He Has 27 Tattoos
Poirier started getting tattoos as a teenager with many of his friends having tattoo guns in his local community.
Included in the 27 are four woman’s names because he has “been brought up by women and I think they are powerful.”
He has his mother’s, grandmother’s and daughters name tattoo’d on various parts of his body.
6. He Is The Only Fighter To Share The Octagon With Both Conor McGregor And Khabib Nurmagomedov
He lost his first fight with McGregor back in 2014 via a first round TKO.
He had a chance to unify the UFC Lightweight Title against Khabib Nurmagomedov but lost via a rear naked choke in the third round in 2019.
And, in his most recent fight, he beat McGregor via 2nd round KO at UFC 257.
7. He Is Mates With Theo Von
Poirier has struck up a friendship with comedian and fellow Louisanian Theo Von in the last couple of years.
He even made an appearance on his podcast ‘ This Past Weekend’.
8. He Has Black Belt In Rex Kwon Do
According to his official Bio on the UFC website, in addition to his BJJ Black Belt, Poirier has a black belt in the little known Rex Kwon Do.
He has also defended his World Thumb Wrestling Title three times!
9. He Has The (equal) Most KO/TKO Wins In UFC Lightweight History
His TKO win against Conor McGregor at UFC 257 was his seventh in the UFC Lightweight Division which equals the UFC record in the division.

10. He has Earned Over Half A Million In UFC Bonuses
Poirier has won himself 12 UFC Bonuses for his performances inside the Octagon and has lined his pockets with extra cash over the years.
This includes seven bonuses in his last nine fights.
He won ‘Performance Of The Night’ honours in his win over McGregor.
