Neds Perfect Match: Cox Plate Edition

Neds Perfect Match: Cox Plate Edition

To celebrate Neds Filter Form, the feature that allows you to find your Perfect Match, we’re looking at Perfect Matches from the world of sport and racing.

This week, it’s the Cox Plate!

Neds Filter Form allows you to create form-based singles and multi bets across all three racing codes without having to study the form.

Simply choose from filters like Jockeys, Tracks and Trainers, and the tip looks after itself!

The Cox Plate is Australia’s premiere weight-for-age contest, and many of our best horses will trade blows with a strong list of internationals at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Get involved in the comments section on Facebook and let us know which Cox Plate perfect matches we’ve forgotten!

Winx & The Race

No horse has a better record in the Cox Plate than Winx.

The champion mare first took her place in the country’s premiere weight-for-age contest during her four-year-old season in 2015, and few would have imagined she’d win each of the next four Cox Plates.

Winx & Hugh Bowman

It’s hard to believe that Hugh Bowman didn’t win one of Australia’s four major races (Golden Slipper, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup) until he was legged aboard Winx in 2015.

Obviously, the bond built by jockey and horse and their winning streak would become as famous as Winx herself, but the Cox Plate was the major goal each and every year.

Winx & Chris Waller

See above – just wanted an excuse to put another Winx clip in.

Kingston Town & The Race

Until Winx completed her fourth in 2018, the legendary Kingston Town was the Cox Plate’s greatest-ever horse.

One TJ Smith’s best horses, the King reigned supreme in three-consecutive Cox Plates from 1980-82.

Champions & Winning

Winx and Kingston Town obviously aren’t the only starts to have won the Cox Plate in its 100-year history, in fact, some of Australia’s and indeed the world’s best horses have reigned supreme.

Even since 1990, many genuine world beaters have won the race including Might And Power, Sunline, Makybe Diva and So You Think.

1992 & Incredible Scenes

The 1992 Cox Plate is perhaps the most memorable edition of the race since its inception, for many reasons.

In a nutshell the field was absolutely stacked – you could make a real case for literally everything, there was a big fall, and Super Impose was ultimately first to greet the judge.

International Stars & The Race

Its status, position in world racing’s landscape and an impressive purse (now a cool $5 million) means that the Cox Plate attracts an outstanding contingent of international raiders each and every year.

Several international stars will take their place in the 2020 Cox Plate field, including Amory and Aspetar.

Three-Year-Olds & Leading

The weight-for-age conditions of the Cox Plate means that three-year-olds are always treated extremely well by the handicapper.

With a light weight in tow, most jockeys riding three-year-olds in the Cox Plate elect to go forward, like Chad Schofield did on Shamus Award in 2013.

Jockeys & Cutting Weight

Following on from the previous Perfect Match, many jockeys have spent a week of two fasting in the lead-up to the Cox Plate to ride a three-year-old.

Colts and geldings are charged with carrying just 49.5kgs in the Cox Plate, with fillies an incredible 47.5kgs.

Jye McNeil will ride the 2020 Cox Plate’s sole three-year-old Grandslam at 49.5kgs.

Great Rivalries & The Race

Many of Australasia’s great racing rivalries have written a chapter in the Cox Plate, including Sunline and Northerly, Bone Crusher and Our Waverley Star.

Winx and Humidor traded blows many times, but that was obviously very one-sided.
