2020 Turnbull Stakes Day Tips & Preview

We have a fantastic day of racing ahead of us at headquarters this Saturday with the feature race being the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over the 2000m.

There is plenty of quality racing taking place and our 2020 Turnbull Stakes Day Tips & Preview can be read below.

Race 1: Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) 12:05pm
No. 10 Excela Bella

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team saddle up this filly by Exceed And Excel in the Maribyrnong Plate to kick start the day at Flemington.

Her only exposed form is a nice trial win at Randwick on the Kensington track and if there is early support for her, I’d have a small each way play.

Race 2: Listed Poseidon Stakes (1100m) 12:40pm
No. 2 Valaquenta & No. 5 Portland Sky

Valaquenta broke through for his maiden race win at Caulfield back in May and was then gelded and spelled.

He returned with a very impressive second behind Muntaseera at Caulfield and he will only improve on that effort, up in distance here.

Portland Sky is another horse that came out of that same Caulfield race first up and was in a bumping dual with the above horse.

That hindrance was enough to halt his momentum at just his second race start but he will be better for the run.

Race 3: Listed Paris Lane Stakes (1400m) 1:15pm
No. 10 Fascino

They tried to stretch this mare out to 2000m during the autumn but I think the 1400m/1600m is her go.

She had absolutely no luck when first up at Caulfield when John Allen found a heap of trouble at a crucial stage and Ben Melham has subsequently picked up the ride in this contest.

He will have plenty of options from barrier two and she looks a touch of overs at $6.50.

Race 4: Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) 1:50pm
No. 6 Santa Ana Lane

Santa Ana Lane was named as The Everest slot holder for Coolmore during the week and he looks a genuine winning chance first up down the Flemington straight.

He usually improves greatly after his first run and Flemington is not his preferred track but he gets in really well at the weights for this contest.

The $4.50 available in this Group 2 event for a horse that has won five times at the top level looks overs.

Race 5: Group 2 Manifold Stakes (1600m) 2:25pm
No. 3 Queen Of Rocks

Queens Of Rocks broke through for her maiden race win at Ballarat two back in impressive fashion before stepping up in class and distance last start.

She was last rounding the bend at Caulfield and had little luck in the straight to finish 1.2 lengths off the winner.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock will be much better suited to Flemington and she has drawn perfectly in barrier three with Willy Pike steering.

Race 6: Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2510m) 3:05pm
No. 11 Admire Robson & No. 15 Persan

Admire Robson was doing his best work late at The Valley first up and will be much better suited at Flemington.

He has been unplaced just three times in 11 career race starts and he drops five kgs for this assignment from barrier four. Well over the odds.

Persan has not missed a place in his last 10 starts dating back to October last year and he should be plenty fit for this Group 3 event.

Race 7: Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) 3:45pm
No. 3 Surprise Baby

Surprise Baby returned to the races with an excellent second behind Humidor in the Feehan Stakes at The Valley.

That was his first run sine he was beaten less than a length in the Melbourne Cup last year and I’m expected him to improve dramatically second up.

He is much better suited to Flemington in my opinion.

Race 8: Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes (1400m) 4:25pm
No. 3 Pretty Brazen

Pretty Brazen brings the best form of any horse into the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes and I’m happy to be with her in a very open betting race.

There are a number of these mares that could win the race but Pretty Brazen already has a Group 2 win and Group 1 placing to her name this prep.

Race 9: Listed Super Impose Stakes (1800m) 5:05pm
No. 2 Khoekhoe & No. 5 Celestial Sol

Found a couple at a nice price to finish the day on a really good note.

Khoekhoe has returned two nice runs this prep so far and the Turffontein colt will appreciate the step up to 1800m at this stage in his prep.

Celestial Sol is another promising colt that will bring a fitness edge into this race having had four starts already this prep.

He has been within two lengths of the winner at his last three outings and the 1800m n the big open spaces of Flemington looks ideal.
