Doomben Tips & Preview – Saturday, July 25

Brisbane’s headline Saturday card will take place at Doomben this week and nine talent-rich races will be run and won.

I’ve torn apart the program, and you can find a preview of each race and all of my Doomben tips below.

Welcome Back To BRC 2YO C&G Handicap (1200m) – 11:53am
No. 2 Acrobatic

Acrobatic will take winning form into the first at Doomben on Saturday and looks well placed to make it two in a row.

The Snitzel gelding finished fourth at his only appearance during his debut prep and has clearly taken benefit from his time away from racing, having comfortably broken his maiden here at Doomben last time.

This is obviously harder, but he looks a progressive type.

best bet
Quincy 2YO Fillies Handicap (1200m) – 12:28pm
No. 1 Kisukano

Kisukano is a star on the rise and she’ll take a power of beating again at Doomben on Saturday.

She capped her debut prep with a smart win in the Aquis Jewel on the Gold Coast, becoming the only horse to have beaten Rothfire in the process, and she resumed a fortnight ago for a dominant win on the Sunshine Coast.

She’ll only improve for that effort and at a little over even money, she is my best bet on the program.

Long May We Play Open Handicap (1600m) – 1:03pm
No. 1 Gresham

This is a pretty open contest (as suggested in its name) and there’s a case to be made for a few, but I don’t think that Gresham will get a better opportunity to win on a Saturday.

He has been reasonably inconsistent this time, but Gresham is still more than capable of a high-rating performance on his day and he beat a classy field, including the likes of Milk Man on the Gold Coast most notably.

He’s rock-hard fit and for mine, he has a slight class edge.

XXXX Dry Class 6 Plate (1200m) – 1:38pm
No. 4 Ditmas

Ditmas will enjoy good improvement from what was only a fair first-up effort and I am happy to give him another chance.

The Helter Skelter gelding has been an excellent horse for the Mel Eggleston stable throughout his career and continued to return high-quality performances last time in, culminating in a dominant win in Class 6 company.

He’s missed a placing just once at this point of his preparation previously, and he is drawn to receive every possible chance from gate 4.

each way
BRC Membership Renewal BM78 Handicap (2000m) – 2:17pm
No. 1 Mangione

Mangione’s consistent preparation continued at Ipswich last week and I am happy to have another each-way play at around the $7 mark.

He saluted for us at $10 earlier in the season and he’s filled the minors of a couple of better races at his last two.

Mangione gets a nice relief in the weights this week with Jackson Murphy’s claim and he is certainly up to winning at this grade.

each way
Kirin Benchmark 90 Handicap (1050m) – 2:57pm
No. 5 Bryan

Veteran sprinter Bryan returned a pleasing performance on debut for Mark Currie at Toowoomba and he can continue his rise back to prominence on Saturday, at a price ($12 at publish).

The Monde Bleu gelding didn’t make an impact during a brief West Australian tenure, but was an excellent horse while under the care of Jarrod McLean in Victoria and won some nice Saturday races in town.

Under the conditions of this race, I’m more than happy to take the each-way price.

Long May We Play 3YO Handicap (1200m) – 3:37pm
No. 8 Maozi

Maozi has been right in the finish of her last three races and strikes another winnable one at Doomben on Saturday.

The Team Edmonds-trained filly won at the Gold Coast three starts back and has placed at her last two, included a talent-rich BM78 race here at Doomben last time.

She’s at peak fitness and won’t be offered a better opportunity at another Saturday win in town.

Moet & Chandon No Metro Wins Handicap (1350m) – 4:13pm
No. 4 Socialising

Socialising simply doesn’t know how to run a bad race and with even luck from out wide, she’ll take a power of beating again at Doomben on Saturday.

The Tony Gollan-trained mare won each of her first three starts back from a spell and was a pretty sick watch into third on the Sunshine Coast last time, having been caught behind runners going backwards.

She’s definitely the one to beat on ability, it’s just all about luck from barrier 15. Happy to dive in at $4.80.

#BNERACES Qtis 3YO Handicap (1600m) – 4:49pm
No. 2 Wapiti

Wapiti will take winning form into the last and from barrier 5, I think that he can do us another favour late in the day.

The Gary Duncan-trained gelding has continued to improve with each start this time in, culminating in a lovely win in the Group 3 Winx Guineas last time out.

He’ll need to luck 61kgs, but this is clearly a big drop in class and he can win again.
