With channel 10 bringing back Family Feud, we’ve decided to spend hours in a deep YouTube hole looking at times our favourite sports stars appeared on celebrity editions of our favourite game shows.
From Archie Thompson making a complete fool of himself on Temptation, Shane Watson botching up the final round on Family Feud to Billy Brownless showing high intellect on Sale of the Century, we’ve got it all here.
Please enjoy for your viewing and procrastinating pleasure.
Sale of The Century
The iconic Channel 9 quiz show was known for its celebrity weeks particularly “The Battle of the Footy Codes” and anyone who was anyone in sport back in the day would have faced the questions either from Glenn Ridge or Tony Barber.
Clearly, someone used to tape Sale of the Century and has uploaded it all on YouTube providing absolute solid gold entertainment.
1995 – Sam Newman, Billy Brownless, Matthew Richardson and Micheal Long
The 1995 AFL special of Sale of the Century was memorable. Sam Newman and Billy Brownless prove themselves to be quite smarter than they appear normal, a young injured Matthew Richardson and Essendon legend Micheal Long clearly wishes he wasn’t there.
1992 – Russell Morris, Dermott Brereton and Peter Dean
The former Hawk turned Saint Russell Morris struggles, the boys quiz Carlton’s Peter Dean as to why he was called “helmet” and Dermott Brereton stages an epic comeback in the “mad minute”.
1991 – David Boon, Kristie Marshall and Wally Lewis
Only the promo made it to YouTube but hopefully, someone has taped it and it is just waiting to be digitised. If you did happen to tape this episode over 27 years ago, please upload it and let us know.
1990 – Sale of the Century Sports Celebrity Challenge
Another “promo only” on YouTube. Again, such a shame because it looks like an absolute who’s who inc. Merv and Nicole Livingstone with the most frizzy late 1980’s hair you can imagine.
TEMPTATION
2007 – Archie Thompson
Arguably the greatest moment on any game show involving an Australian athlete, Archie Thompson makes a complete tit of himself.
Also, note the host Ed Phillips refer to the A-League as the “National Soccer League”
WHEEL OF FORTUNE
1995 – Matthew Richardson
Richo appeared on another game show when he was invited to visit Burgo to Spin that Wheel back in 1995. He fails at trying to solve the puzzle.
FAMILY FEUD
2016 – Big Bash Cricketers
Shane Watson crumbles when he needs to win the game for his team. How on brand!
2016 – AFL Legends
Like Grant Denyer was going to tell Barry Hall any of his answers were wrong.
2006 – Darrel Eastlake
The late, great Darrel Eastlake leads a team of B-grade celebrities on the Bert Newton version of Family Feud. it was HUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEEEE.
1991- Team Australian Motor Sport
Back in 1991, Allan Grice, Kevin Bartlett, Dick Johnson and John Smith were the Motor Racers that got to take on a bunch of characters from sketch comedy shows at the time. The only one that stands out is Hey Hey It’s Saturday’s resident poet Raymond J. Barthemlow.
1991 – The NBL vs Young Talent Time
The stars of the NBL from the early 1990s including Phil Smyth from the Canberra Cannons, Leroy Loggins from the Brisbane Bullets, Damien Keogh from the Sydney Kings and Larry Sengstock from the Gold Coast Rollers took on ex-cast members from Young Talent Time. The ultimate in Aussie nostalgia.
WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE
2000 – Sam Newman
Not a footy show sketch, the actual thing.
Back in the days when Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was a prime-time television event, Sam Newman faced Eddie.
This was also on the night Red Symonds blew a $500,000 question at the expense of his home viewer and charity.
Perfect Match
1990 – Wayne Carey
While the entire episode isn’t on YouTube, this one clip from Wayne Carey going on a Perfect Match AFL special from back in the day is all you need.
