Sha Tin Tips & Preview – Sunday, June 21

Two Group 3’s headline Sunday’s 11-race program at Sha Tin, and our Honkers expert has cast his eye over the form below!

Race 1: Class 5 Handicap (1000m), 2:30pm
No. 10 MoneyMore

MoneyMore tends to save his best racing for Happy Valley but should prove tough to hold out after finding the placings a fortnight ago over the 1200m at this venue.

The five-year-old son of Reward For Effort gets in light at the weights and jockey Vagner Borges has plenty of options to work with from the soft draw.

Roman Odyssey strips fitter for his last assignment when fourth behind Victorious Leader over the 1200m at Happy Valley.

He tends to race better at the city circuit too, but he warrants respect with a win and four placings to his name over the 1000m.

Whistle Up returns from a two-month spell and has found the placings before first-up. He’s winless in 27 starts but might be worth a look in the minors racing fresh.

Race 2: Class 4 Handicap (1200m), 3:00pm
No. 14 Green Envy

Green Envy is still in search of his maiden win but doesn’t look far off after showing improvement in his last start over the mile at Happy Valley a fortnight ago.

The Caspar Fownes-trained four-year-old drops 2.5kg under Matthew Chadwick, and from an identical gate, he should enjoy a lovely run into the race.

Voyage Star was a winner three starts back over the course and distance where he led all the way.

He maps to get a similar run this time out under apprentice Dylan Mo and is obviously much better than his last two starts suggest.

Winning Brew is also worth a big watch in the market. He was impressive on debut finishing second behind comfortable winner CoolCeleb back in May and now gets Zac Purton on board for the first time looking to go one better.

Race 3: The Premier Cup (1400m), 3:30pm
No. 5 Perfect Match

Thanks Forever was a narrow winner in the Group 3 Sha Tin Vase and now looks a slight query stepping up to the 1400m with the top weight of Zac Purton on board.

Fat Turtle gave chase to Thanks Forever in the same race finishing half a length fourth. The son of Smart Missile is a horse of real ability, and with even luck, he should be doing his best work late.

Perfect Match was a last start winner over the track and distance and now steps up to Group level for the first time.

The Not A Single Doubt gelding has won six from his eight starts over the trip, and while this is a tougher race, he’s got the right jockey in the saddle from a good draw.

Race 4: Class 4 Handicap (1200m), 4:00pm
No. 5 Golden Link

Golden Link was absolutely airborne last time out in what was his second career start.

The three-year-old son of Per Incanto rattled home for second over the track and distance at double-figure odds behind Scores Of Fun, and with Joao Moreira booked to ride, you just know he’s going to come close again.

Happy Victory is an exciting prospect now that he’s ventured over the Tony Millard yard.

The five-year-old strips fitter for his second-up effort when third behind Hinyuen Swiftness back in May, and from an equally handy draw, Antonine Hamelin should have him in a good position to strike for a well overdue win.

Race 5: Class 4 Handicap (1200m), 4:30pm
No. 2 Kinda Cool

Yee Cheong Pegasus again looks the one to beat after dashing home to win by a length over the course and distance ahead of Hero Star last time out.

The son of Lonhro is absolutely flying since transferred to the Tony Millard yard with two wins and four placings to his name this term. He rarely runs a bad race over this distance, and he should be fit and firing coming off a three-week break between runs.

Kinda Cool is having his third career start but does look a horse of ability based on his debut performance when second over the 1000m.

He wasn’t disgraced second-up either running fourth over the 1200m, so I’m intrigued to see how he goes here having drawn an inside gate for the first time.

Race 6: Class 4 Handicap (2000m), 5:00pm
No. 10 Good Days

Good Days is well-deserving of another victory based on his last four performances where he’s found the placings twice over this journey.

Zac Purton retains the ride on the six-year-old and with even luck, he should be found doing his best work late.

Gala Night prefers Happy Valley to Sha Tin, but he’s a talented stayer capable of leading all the way from the front.

Bullish Glory is shooting for two in a row and rates as a strong hope carrying only 56kg from the soft draw. Karis Teetan will need to time his run a bit better than he did last time out where the pair won by only half a length.

Race 7: Class 4 Handicap (1600m), 5:35pm
No. 4 So We Joy

Enjoy Life was a comfortable winner over the track and distance three weeks ago and rates as the one to beat with Ben So taking over the reins again.

The pair found the placings two runs back, and from barrier 6, you have to think they’ll be thereabouts once again.

So We Joy gets Joao Moreira for the first time hoping to finally break through for his maiden.

The son of So You Think showed great improvement rattling home for third in his last start over the 1400m, so the step up to the mile looks ideal, even if the wide draw poses a few challenges.

Race 8: The Premier Plate (1800m), 6:05pm
No. 1 Southern Legend

New Zealand galloper Furore has placed in his last two starts at Group 1 level and will take a power of beating here stepping back to the 1800m.

The five-year-old son of Pierro hasn’t found the winner’s stall since his impressive victory in the 2019 Hong Kong Derby, but this does look a race he’s capable of winning if the tempo suits.

Southern Legend won over this trip in the Group 3 Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse back in November and is again tough to fault based on his recent form.

The seven-year-old was the surprise winner of the Group 1 Champions Mile two starts back before finishing second in the Group 3 Lions Rock Trophy last month.

Savvy Nine is unlucky not to have won more races. He was no match for the champion Exultant in the Chater Cup, but he again warrants respect with Joao Moreira in the saddle. The only real knock is his lack of form at Sha Tin.

Race 9: Class 3 Handicap (1400m), 6:35pm
No. 11 Flying Sword

Flying Sword can mix his form but he races anything like he did last start when second over the 1200m behind Beauty Amigo, he should be winning.

Merrygowin struggled to make use of the inside draw first-up over the track and distance but has won previously second-up before. He drops a kg with Matthew Chadwick retaining the ride and has another soft draw in his favour.

Superb Daddy has won two from his three starts over this distance including last time out in a Class 4, albeit narrowly, over Super Red Dragon.

He’s struggled recently among Class 3 company but does have the inside draw working in his favour.

Race 10: Class 3 Handicap (1400m), 7:10pm
No. 3 Amazing Chocolate

Amazing Chocolate was enormous first-up winning by over five-lengths and if he brings his best on Sunday, he could easily win by a similar margin.

The son of Sepoy is coming off a three-week break and the fact he remains in Class 3 company is obviously a huge bonus.

The Rock could be one to watch at odds if his appearance back in January is anything to go by.

We haven’t seen the British import at the races since, but he tends to race well first-up with three placings in as many starts.

Race 11: Class 3 Handicap (1200m), 7:45pm
No. 5 Good Luck Friend

Good Luck Friend can go back-to-back under Joao Moreira after winning his last start by a comfortable margin.

The three-year-old has the draw working in his favour here, and with little speed in the race, he should be able to go forward and race on his terms.

Big Fortune has won three times over this distance and should appreciate the 4.5kg claim of Jerry Chau in the saddle.

He ran on well for second two starts back over the 1200m at Happy Valley, and did show some promise here at Sha Tin back in January.

Super Dobbin has been charged with the top weight under Karis Teetan. He didn’t show much in his Hong Kong debut back in April, but has won second-up before and is worth considering each-way.
