Boy oh boy am I glad footy and the mighty Brisbane Lions (proudly sponsored by Neds) is back!
I’ve spent my time in isolation watching the 2001-03 Three-peat, One Step Closer- The Brisbane Bears 1996 highlights tape, Mick Conlan saving the day for Fitzroy in the 1986 Elimination final against Essendon and hours upon hours on YouTube looking at Clark Keating highlights on a constant loop.
While these have all been a joy to watch, it still hasn’t filled the void of having the mighty Brisbane Lions (proudly sponsored by Neds) playing every weekend.
Bring on the bounce of the ball this Saturday afternoon.
What a bloody great time to be a Queenslander!
Not only have we locked the border from New South Wales, but Western Australia’s border shutdown and strict quarantine policy have resulted in the sunshine state becoming officially the heartland of Australian Rules Football.
Queensland now has double the professional AFL clubs based in this fine state, compared to Rugby League which is a developing sport trying to have a crack and good for them.
With West Coast and Fremantle moving into the Gold Coast and Port and the Crows to join them next week – no team has benefited more than us as we’ve been granted four consecutive home games at the Gabba.
While it is a shame that a packed house is still a while off, I’ve made sure to hire a cherry-picker and a Hazmat suit to be able to watch the boys this Saturday.
Is it Saturday yet?! 🦁 pic.twitter.com/esF3GqWzsF

It’ll be great to dust off and forget that our 28-point round 1 loss to the Hawks ever happened and give our new fellow Queensland AFL club – the Fremantle Dockers a baptism of fire.
Our boys will be revved up and ready to go and will be sure to make hay while the sunshines winning the first of our four on the trot on our home deck.
Brisbane Lions (proudly sponsored by Neds) v Fremantle, formally known as The Lachie Neale Cup, is now the Queensland Derby and as a result, the player judged best on ground will receive the Lachie Neale Medal – which odds on will be Lachie Neale.
The 2020 Brownlow Medalist should yet again be in top form for this match and really show up the likes of Nat Fyfe, who is still struggling to come terms he can’t go for a surf despite being incredibly good looking.
While the shorter quarters means that Lachie may not get as much leather poisoning than usual, he should find himself with plenty of the Sherrin.
If we are to stamp our authority against the Dockers – a 30+ disposal game from Lachie Neale should be part of the plan.
Club Champ Lachie Neale is relaxed ahead of footy’s return this week and says despite playing against his old club, he will approach round two like any other game.

Now, this is a market that puts the special in special.
Neds – proud sponsor of the Brisbane Lions are offering a solid $4 for Charlie Cameron to score the 1st, 2nd or 3rd goal of the match.
I believe he will kick all three of the first goals of the game, but this as good as going each-way.

Ned Merrett-Murray is Neds resident Brisbane Lions nuffie. The child of the ultimate Brisbane Lions parents, whose mother rattled tins to save Fitzroy and Dad dined with Christopher Skase at Carrara, Ned was a Brisbane Lions diehard from birth. Ned constantly reminds his wife and kids that 2001, 02 and 03 Grand Final’s were the best days of his life and nothing compares to it. Ned never misses a game, training session, JLT, AFLW, NEAFL and Fitzroy Ammos match. Ned lives in Woolongabba with his wife Leigh and twins Chris and Brad and pet fish Vossy, Browny and Blacky.
