The Group 3 Hyperion Stakes is the feature at Belmont on Saturday in what is shaping up to be a value-packed nine-race program.
William Pike could be in for a huge day if all things go according to plan, and as always, we’ve analysed everything you need to know in our complete 2020 Hyperion Stakes Day Tips & Preview below!
*All times are local*
This is a very difficult betting race to open the program, but I am willing to have something on Nuhad to make it two-from-two.
The two-year-old filly put a gap between herself and the rest of the field when winning on debut over the track and distance a fortnight ago where she kicked away to win by two and a half lengths.
She maps to get a similar run up on the speed, and if William Pike can overcome the wide draw, her class should prove tough to beat.
Nerodio was outstanding first-up at the mid-weeks last Wednesday and looks extremely tough to beat with Jordan Turner retaining the ride.
The four-year-old ran into some traffic at the top of the straight but showed a lovely turn of foot once he shifted over to the fence. He’s drawn wider here, but a comfortable two-length win suggests he’ll appreciate the step up to the 1200m.
Tajmali is also tough to knock.
She’s won four from five starts this time in and has finally drawn to get the gun run from barrier 4.
Position Of Power is next best. He should appreciate the step up in trip after running third over the 1000m behind Tajmali and is a second-up winner previously.
Miss Frost is the obvious choice after missing narrowly behind all-the-way winner Tawny Pete last time out.
William Pike just mis-timed his run on the four-year-old and was unlucky not to have secured his third win aboard the mare. The pair look tough to beat again, but it will be interesting to see how she races from the inside draw considering she normally likes to run on out wide.
The lightly-raced She’s Enchanted is the main danger with a win and a placing over the distance.
False Statement is another that likes to run on, just like he did first-up in his comfortable victory over the track and distance a fortnight ago.
If he gets a wet track, he’s a real chance.
Aberdeen Queen is shooting for four in a row, but might find this tough up in distance among the company of some quality three-year-olds.
Indian Pacific will likely go forward and is more than capable of leading from barrier to box, especially with a win to his name second-up previously.
Resortman is much better than his latest effort suggests when fourth behind Showmanship.
He had to overcome the wide gate that day and the fact he’s backing up suggests he’s pulled up well.
Levitate rates highly also with two wins and three placings from six career starts.
The three-year-old gets William Pike, again from the low draw, and if he produces a late effort like he did last time out over the 1200m he’ll be tough to hold out.
Windstorm is the odds-on favourite in the fifth at Belmont despite his shock second to Indian Pacific first-up over the 1200m a fortnight ago.
The three-year-old by Redoute’s Choice is one of the highest regarded horses in the country right now and it isn’t hard to draw positives from his previous start considering he missed by half a length carrying 60.5kg.
Pike is in the saddle again, this time 5kg lighter. He’ll likely go back from the wide draw but should find himself with plenty of horse underneath him in the late stages.
Kelvin has won twice over this distance, while Double Bubble is the other main danger third-up with a win and a placing in his two previous outings.
A gun ride from the ‘Wizard of the West’ William Pike saw Picture Perfect salute for punters last time out, and the pair will again jump as favourites on Saturday dropping back to the 2000m.
Divine Shadow comes out of the same race where he finished second. The four-year-old will take great improvement out of that run but does have a tricky gate to contend with.
British Bessy looks a little over the odds with a win and a placing to her name over this distance, and she probably won’t know herself getting back to 55.5kg.
She’s drawn to get the gun run under Alan Kennedy and strips fitter for her last start third behind Picture Perfect, so happy to have her each-way.
Grant and Alana Williams have thrown Serenity Bay into the deep end here first-up in what appears to be one of the more wide open betting races of the day.
The four-year-old has won previously when resuming, but considering she is only lightly raced, there is a chance she finds this a little tough in her return to the races.
Costa Del Santo can take this out with even luck. He likes to run on from out wide and we know he’s capable of winning with some weight on his back.
Eurasia is a two-time winner over this journey and now drops 3.5kg following his disappointing last start sixth over the 1200m, while it’s also worth watching the market on Sublime Image with a decent record first-up.
You could make a case for almost half the field coming out of the Belmont Sprint, but Angelic Ruler is the one for mine.
The four-year-old looked like the winner a fortnight ago when she wound up on the outside, but she just hit a bit of a flat spot at the 150m mark that cost her a stride to Perfect Jewel and The Velvet King for second.
She is a query over the mile, but the mare by Universal Ruler is rock hard fit and maps to get a similar late run from the wide gate, this time under Joseph Azzopardi.
Humidor is one that could throw a spanner in the works. He’s a four-time winner over the trip and a four-time winner second-up. His best days are seemingly behind him, but don’t discount him sneaking in along the rails.
Pike in the last is always a popular strategy, so no surprise to see Not To Be Mist as the short-priced favourite at time of publish.
The son of Danehill Express is yet to run a bad race first-up and will take a power of beating here so long as it stays in the Soft 5 range.
Mankind is on the short backup and it appears a win is right around the corner following his last start fourth over the track and distance last week. He was double-digit odds last Saturday and appears to be well-found this time around.
Multiverse is the one to keep an eye. The son of Universal Ruler loves a wet deck and is an impressive seven-time winner over this track and distance. The early odds on offer might be a touch overs.
