2020 Civic Stakes Day Tips & Preview

The Listed Civic Stakes is the feature race of the day at Rosehill on Saturday but there is plenty of quality racing taking place.

We’ve run through all nine races and our 2020 Civic Stakes Day Tips & Preview can be found below.

Race 1: Alabama Express @ Yulong Handicap (1400m) 11:35am
No. 1 Frosty Rocks

It’s going to be extremely tough to tip against Frosty Rocks in the first event of day after his demolition job at Warwick Farm last time out.

He gave his rivals a lesson when winning by over eight lengths to record his second win this prep from three starts.

The 1400m will not be a problem and he should be ready to peak at his fourth run.

Race 2: Highway Handicap (1400m) 12:10pm
No. 7 Rothenburg

Rothenburg has won just once in his short 13 race career but he has rarely put in a poor effort.

He will find this grade of racing easier than the open class he has been competing in up in Queensland and he has the added benefit of James McDonald steering from barrier one.

Race 3: Coolmore Stayer's Cup (3200m) 12:45pm
No. 7 Loveseat

I have been with Loveseat this whole prep and while she has been somewhat disappointing, she has still been racing well.

The 3200m is a query that is shared by the vast majority of this field and she gets in with just the 53kg.

Her staying credentials will be tested but her class will take her a long way at a nice each way price.

Race 4: Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (1800m) 1:20pm
No.10 Hanna From Havana

Hanna From Havana has managed three in a row recently and the $51 at time of publish is very much over the odds (now out to $81)

Race 5: De Bortoli Wines Handicap (1100m)
No. 9 You Make Me Smile

I love the way You Make Me Smile has trialed leading into this first up assignment.

He will jump and go straight to the front and although this is short of his best distance, he goes well when fresh and has drawn to get a lovely run in transit.

Any rain will not bother him.

Race 6: Listed W J Mckell Cup (2000m) 2:30pm
No. 2 Sixties Groove & No. 12 Attention Run

Australian Bloodstock have a mortgage on this race with no less than four runners and I think the team has a couple that are primed for this race.

Some of the others at the top of the market have been up and down in distance whereas the two I have tipped looked ready to peak and have a lot of upside.

Race 7: Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) 3:10pm
No. 8 Trumbull

This is a pretty weak Listed race and the Kim Waugh trained Trumbull will get a chance at winning a black type race here.

The four year old has been racing really well without winning this prep including a a fourth, beaten only 1.7 lengths, at Listed level behind Ranier three starts back.

Tommy Berry steers from barrier nine.

Race 8: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1500m) 3:50pm
No. 1 Spencer

Spencer has been racing very well at this grade of racing this prep which has included a narrow second behind True Detective at Rosehill two back.

The form around that horse has been red hot and the five year old gelding by Pierro will be fighting out the finish yet again.

Race 9: Hyland EOFY Sale Handicap (1200m) 4:30pm
No. 2 Dio D'oro

I have a lot of time for this four year old gelding by Medaglia D’oro and although he has just the four wins from 24 career race starts he is always competitive in his races.

He has drawn perfectly with Glen Boss on board and I like the fact that he has had a barrier trial in between runs.
