UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs Burns – Tips & Preview

The UFC returns to Vegas this weekend for another exciting instalment of the Fight Night series. We’ve got a very exciting Welterweight clash at Main Event, with the hard-hitting Tyron Woodley taking on Gilbert Burns. The Co-Main also looks very appealing, with top Heavyweights Blagoy Ivanov and Augusto Sakai facing off. We’ll preview both of these fights, providing our best bets in the process.

Tyron Woodley vs Gilbert Burns, Welterweight, Main Event
Woodley by KO

Tyron Woodley: The 38-year-old vet enters this clash with an impressive career record of 19-4-1. He went undefeated for 7 straight fights before losing his Welterweight belt to Kamaru Usman last March. He is known primarily for his speed and striking ability, recording 7 knockouts and 5 submissions thus far.

Gilbert Burns: The rising Brazilian enters this clash with a strong 18-3 record of his own. He has been especially impressive of late, winning each of his last 5 fights by finish or unanimous decision. He is an expert at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, leveraging his skill to record 8 career submissions.

Prediction: Woodley by KO

These are two very impressive Welterweights, but Woodley’s speed and power give him the edge here. Burns will likely try to get this to the ground, but Woodley is incredibly capable at wrestling and BJJ. I expect him to control this fight on the feet, striking Burns early and often. Burns hasn’t faced a striker of Woodley’s quality before and I think an early shot drops him here.

Blagoy Ivanov vs Augusto Sakai, Heavyweight, Co-Main
Ivanov to Win $1.91

Blagoy Ivanov: Ivanov enters this bout with a very strong career record of 18-3-1. He is very astute on the ground for a big man, having already recorded 6 submission wins. He is 2-2 since joining the UFC in 2018, losing a close split decision to Derrick Lewis last time out.

Augusto Sakai: The Japanese-Brazilian behemoth has had an impressive start to his MMA career, going 14-1-1 thus far. He is known for his excellent speed and power, with 11 of his wins coming by knockout. He is undefeated since joining the UFC in 2018, earning knockout wins over Chase Sherman and Marcin Tybura.

Prediction: Ivanov to Win $1.91

This is definitely an evenly matched bout, but I think Ivanov’s ability on the ground gives him the edge here. Sakai definitely wants to keep this on the feet and hasn’t faced a BJJ artist of Ivanov’s quality. I expect Ivanov to shoot for takedowns early and often, either outpointing him or getting the finish. With all 3 methods of victory in play, near even money for the win is decent value.
