The UFC stays in Jacksonville for its third Fight Night event in the last 7 days. Our Heavyweight Main Event pits veteran Alistair Overeem up against the improving Walt Harris. We’ve also got an exciting Co-Main between Claudia Gadelha and Angela Hill, one which looks to be pivotal in the Strawweight division. We’ll preview both of these fights, providing our best bet for each.
Alistair Overeem: Now almost 40 years of age, ‘The Reem’ enters this bout with a 45-18 record for his career. Renowned for his excellent finishing ability, the Dutchman has 23 knockouts and 17 submissions to his name. His recent form hasn’t been all that great, losing in 3 of his last 5 bouts.
Walt Harris: A relative latecomer to MMA, Harris sports a record of 13-7-1 for his career. Known primarily for his excellent power, each of his 13 wins have come by way of knockout. He enters this bout in career-best form, having won by early knockout in each of his last 3 official fights.
Prediction: Harris by KO
This could be the end of the road for Overeem, while Harris continues to climb the ranks at Heavyweight. Overeem’s chin has been particularly vulnerable in recent years and one Harris haymaker could lead to an early KO. His lack of BJJ experience is somewhat of a concern, but his strong takedown defence should keep this on the feet. Especially in a 5-round bout, the best value play is Harris to continue his KO streak.
Claudia Gadelha: One of the most accomplished Strawweights of all time, Gadelha enters this bout with a 17-4 record, having gone 6-4 in the UFC. She is known for her strong ability on the ground, having won 9 fights by submission to date. Her recent form hasn’t been ideal, although she managed a solid decision win over Rand Markos last time out.
Angela Hill: Having previously gone 16-0 as a Pro Kickboxer, Hill has a 12-7 career record in MMA. Much more of a power fighter, she has 5 knockouts to her name. She initially struggled when joining the UFC but has since managed to win her last 3 fights rather comfortably.
Prediction: Gadelha by Points
For my money, Gadelha is the much better of these two fighters. She can more than hold her own striking and I think she has a huge advantage on the ground here. She is excellent at putting pressure on her opponents and I expect a ton of volume as she outstrikes Hill in a decision win.
