2020 South Australian Derby Tips

Sometimes it’s an afterthought, sometimes it doesn’t boast the depth of talent that some of its interstate counterparts do, but it is fair to say that the 2020 South Australian Derby field is absolutely outstanding.

Fourteen colts, geldings and fillies will step out on the 2500m course at Morphettville on Saturday for one of, if not the strongest edition of the South Australian Derby since the turn of the century.

Suggested Bets

  • 2 Units straight out #1 Dalasan
  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections below
South Australian Derby - Winner
No. 1 Dalasan

He didn’t find his best form during the Melbourne autumn, but a return to his home state has proven the difference for Dalasan and he certainly would not look out of place in the South Australian Derby winner’s stall. The Dalakhani colt was a strong and consistent performer for the Macdonald and Gluyas stable through the spring, beating Scales Of Justice here before heading to Melbourne to win both the Danehill and the Carbine Club Stakes most notably. While he did take a few to get going this time, he ran home well in the All-Star Mile and was far too good in both the Port Adelaide Guineas and the Group 3 Chairman’s at his last two. He’s untested at the trip, but he is rock-hard fit and should be fighting out the finish.

South Australian Derby - 2nd
No. 4 Russian Camelot

To say that he is a headcase is probably an understatement, but there’s absolutely no arguing with Russian Camelot’s ability when he puts it all together. The son of Camelot won easily on debut at Ballarat and was put away after running second in a Listed race at Flemington on Oaks Day, and while he needed the run when fourth at Flemington first-up this time, he put a weaker field to the sword at Pakenham last time out. This is obviously a lot harder, but he harbours good improvement, will relish getting out in trip and is drawn to receive plenty of favours.

South Australian Derby - 3rd
No. 12 Moonlight Maid

One of three fillies in the 2020 South Australian Derby field, Moonlight Maid was tough to the line for second in last weekend’s Australasian Oaks and is another horse that will relish getting out to 2500m. The Puissance De Lune filly has quickly become the stable star for up and coming trainer Mitch Freedman and won the Group 2 Edward Manifold in spring before ending her prep third in the Oaks. She needed a couple of find her best this time in, but the rise to 2000m proved ideal and she’ll only be better under the conditions of this race.

South Australian Derby - 4th
No. 2 Warning

Warning won the Victoria Derby in dominant fashion last preparation and will take a power of beating in this race as well. The Anthony Freedman-trained colt could hardly have been more impressive during the spring and he’s returned some more pleasing efforts this time in, in the toughest three-year-old races. He was last seen finishing a couple of lengths from Dalasan in the Group 3 Chairman’s and he is rock-hard fit for this race, while he is another horse that will only be better at the 2500m.
