2020 Octagonal Handicap Day Tips & Preview

Octagonal. What a race horse he was! To have a race named in his honour is very fitting.

We’ve found the winner of the feature race as well as every other race on the card below.

I mean, it’s possible…

Race 1: Darley Handicap (1300m) 11:30am
No. 7 Overlord

Overlord has filled the minor placings in his two career runs including a fast finishing second behind Pelter at Randwick last start.

The son of Sebring was doing his best work late in that race and he will appreciate the step up in distance to 1300m for this assignment.

He meets Peltzer 2kgs better at the weights and he represents the value in a very open first race of the day.

Race 2: Highway Handicap (1300m) 12:05pm
No Bet

I’ve had no luck whatsoever picking the winner of the Highway race in recent times and this is another very open betting affair that I am happy to be staying out of.

Race 3: Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (2000m) 12:40pm
No. 3 Foxborough

Foxborough played with her rivals when scoring at Wagga last start by 5.5 lengths.

It was not the strongest field but the way in which she won can not be ignored, she handled the heavy track extremely well when others didn’t.

Her only go at 2000m was at Group 2 level where she ran fifth in the Wakeful Stakes and she has matured into a much better horse.

This is also a massive drop down in class from that.

Race 4: Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000m) 1:15pm
No. 11 Loveseat

I’m going to give Loveseat another chance after a pretty flat effort last time out at Randwick.

She was well supported that day but was never a winning chance after getting so far back in the run.

Sam Clipperton climbs aboard the four year old mare from barrier five and she will appreciate the step up in distance.

best bet
Race 5: At Sea Handicap (1100m) 1:55pm
No. 3 Coruscate

Coruscate was placed at Listed level at Caulfield two starts back behind William Thomas before finding one better last time out on the heavy surface.

He is a very consistent galloper having won five of his 18 race starts and has been unplaced only five times in his entire career.

Kerrin McEvoy climbs aboard and will steer from barrier seven.

Race 6: Calyx At Coolmore Handicap (1500m) 2:30pm
No. 8 Opacity

Opacity strung together three wins in a row after he broke through for his maiden at Goulburn last prep.

He returned with a sound fifth at Randwick behind Solider Of God and Subpoeanaed and he will appreciate the step up in distance.

Hugh Bowman and barrier three are both beneficial as well.

each way
Race 7: Exceedance At Vinery Handicap (1000m) 3:10pm
No. 7 November Man

With the scratching of I Am A Cool Kid I’m happy to have a little something each way on November Man.

Things need to pan in running for the five year old gelding, but he has a good record over the short course at Randwick, and he represents good value at the double figures.

Race 8: Octagonal Handicap (1400m) 3:50pm
No. 2 Miss Fabulass

Miss Fabulass has been racing well this prep without winning in Group company including her second in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic and the well-bred daughter of Frankel should be plenty fit at this stage in her prep.

I like the fact that Kris Lees has given the four year old mare a freshen up as well as a trial in between runs and she should get a nice run in transit from barrier six.

Race 9: Sky Racing Active Handicap (1200m) 4:30pm
No. 3 So Taken

So Taken has won just the three times in her 19 race career, but she has been racing well without winning this prep.

She went very close last time out when the talented Rocha Clock stormed over her late and a repeat of that performance would see her go very close in this contest.

She has drawn well in barrier two and hopefully she can finish our day on a winning note.
