MONDAY APRIL 6th:
Golf – The Masters 1997 – Tiger Woods
FOX Sports 503 8 pm
FOX Sports have dedicated their 503 channel to nothing but classics from The Masters giving Golf Fans something to really get around this week.
Tonight, FOX 503 is showing Tiger Woods legendary performance in the 1997 Masters when the then 21-year-old burst out on the scene in what many experts describe as the best performance by an individual in over a century.
AFL – Classics – Fitzroy v Fremantle Round 8 1996
FOX Footy/Kayo 504 Midnight
One to set the IQ or stream on Kayo but Fitzroy’s last ever win against Fremantle in 1996 was a sad yet happy day in the history of the game.
The Roys were on a 21 game losing streak but started the ’96 season with some spirited performances and some beltings.
Something clicked on May 18th 1996 when the Roys took on the Dockers at the Whitten Oval.
Fitzroy led at every change, Anthony Mellington kicked six goals, the likes of Nick Carter, Martin Pike and Chris Johnson dominated as the Roys recorded a 31 point win, which would be their last before merging with Brisbane six weeks later.
The scenes at the end are some of the most jubilant and emotional you’ll ever see and the 5083 people at the ground made the most of it.
TUESDAY APRIL 7th
NRL – FOX League Live
FOX League 5 pm
Both FOX League and FOX Footy soldier on with their daily live radio-on-the -TV shows.
While neither are re-inventing the wheel, both the AFL and NRL versions make for good companionship and banter while both sports are in recess.
The panellists rotate, the guests are anyone who’s anyone and the batner is pretty good.
Some liken it to when Krusty took over the Emergency Broadcast System on The Simpsons, but at least it’s something.
NFL – 2006 Monday Night Football Classic – New Orleans Saints v Atlanta Falcons
ESPN2 5 pm
One of the most emotional games in US sports history as ESPN2 replays the 2006 encounter between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.
This was the first match played at the Superdome since Hurricane Katrina and from a Football perspective features the most memorable blocked punt in NFL history.
It also resulted in this collaboration between U2 and Green Day.
WEDNESDAY APRIL 8th
Dodgeball – America’s Dodgeball Continental Cup – USA v Canada
ESPN 5 pm
Inspired by the movie Dodgeball ESPN is bringing the Ocho to our screens and showing the unique, special and random sports its famous for.
While Average Joes v Globogym is fictional, Team USA v Canada isn’t and the game is just as brutal as you remember playing it in High School.
The replay of last years America’s Dodgeball Continental Cup is worth a watch as much pride is on the line.
We’ve seen America and Canada battle it out in Ice Hockey, just wait till you see them do Dodgeball.
2007 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest
ESPN 6 pm
One of the greatest rivalries in the history of World Sport is no doubt the contest between Joey Chestnut of the USA and Takeru Kobayashi from Japan in the Rhode Island Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The rivalry reached its peak back in 2007 when Joey Chestnut beat six-time defending champion, Takeru Kobayashi, by eating 66 hot dogs in a photo finish.
This would be the first of the Joey Chestnut dynasty as he would go on to win the next eight Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests.
THURSDAY APRIL 9th
The FOX FOOTY 50/50
FOX Footy – All Weekend
The Easter long weekend presents a perfect opportunity for FOX Footy to replay the classic games and this weekend the channel presents the 50 best games of all time as voted by the viewers.
Given that the 1994 Preliminary Final between North Melbourne v Geelong finished at number 50, I question the merits of the democratic process.
Having said that, I will be spending a lot of this weekend tuned to FOX Footy watching these classic games and much like listening to the Hottest 100 I will declare that “It shoulda been higher” no matter the position.
The Games
ABC iView
Believe it or not, it’s 20 years since Sydney 2000.
Feel old yet?
Time passing by aside, the ABC’s iView service has the classic comedy series The Games which features Brian Dawe, Gina Rielly and the late, great John Clarke working to organise the Sydney Olympics.
From the 100 meters track not being 100 meters, athletes calling themselves Pepsi or working out where the Lacrosse venue would be placed and “John Howard’s” apology, it’s all here and the next best binge-watch to Tiger King over the Easter break.
