2020 Adelaide Cup Day Tips & Preview

Adelaide Cup Day is one of South Australia’s headline cards and all focus will be on Morphettville on Monday.

We found a few winners at a price last year and experienced the real emergence of quality stayer Surprise Baby. I’m confident of a similar day in 2020, and you can find a full preview of each race and my 2020 Adelaide Cup Day tips below.

Hit107 Handicap (2006m) – 12:30pm AEDT
No. 2 Farooq

Farooq will take winning form into the first on Adelaide Cup Day and can make it two in a row. The Frankel gelding hasn’t run a bad race in three since resuming this time and was rewarded for his form with a dominant win over a mile here at Morphettville last time out. The rise in trip at this point of his prep looks ideal and he’ll take a power of beating.

Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic (1200m) – 1:05pm AEDT
No. 2 Amish Boy

Amish Boy is yet to record a race win, but he has shown good ability in his three career starts so far and I think that he is up to breaking through in the Magic Millions race. The Star Witness Colt ran fifth in the Group 3 McLachlan Stakes in Queensland in late December and resumed from a brief let-up to finish fourth in the Listed Talindert three weeks ago. He’ll take good improvement from that run and is primed to win.

AAMI Handicap (1200m) – 1:40pm AEDT
No. 2 Hint Of Mint

Hint Of Mint is another horse that will take winning form into her appearance at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day and she looks up to making it two in a row. The Delago Deluxe filly has only had five starts since debuting in October but has more than stamped herself as a horse to follow, recording three wins. A relatively easy triumph in BM70 company at Pakenham last time out was one of the better performances that she has so far mustered, and this looks another very winnable one for her.

Winning Edge Presentations Handicap (1200m) – 2:15pm AEDT
No. 3 One More Jack

One More Jack has been nothing short of outstanding this time in and for mine, he is quite clearly the horse to beat in the fourth on Adelaide Cup Day. The Shane Oxlade-trained gelding is yet to taste anything but success in four starts back from a spell; winning at Port Lincoln and Strathalbyn twice before making the big step up to city grade with a near four-length win here last time out. He’s at peak condition and can continue his rise through the grades.

Furphy Handicap (1600m) – 2:50pm AEDT
No. 8 Flying Pierro

Flying Pierro filled the minors here in what was his first start for Richard Jolly and will take good improvement into this race. The former Chris Waller runner has returned good performances and some excellent results throughout his racing career and has the ability to win something of this quality. Jake Toeroek will have options from the rails draw and with even luck, the horse can fight out the finish.

Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) – 3:30pm AEDT
No. 2 Over Exposure

Over Exposure has continued to improve with racing recently and the CS Hayes Memorial Cup looks a lovely race for him. The Rothesay gelding finished a length from the winner over a mile at Flemington two back before hitting the line and filling the minors in BM82 company last time out. There really aren’t any stars in this race and it is a very winnable feature for a fit Over Exposure.

Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) – 4:15pm AEDT
No. 4 King Of Leogrance

This is an outstanding edition of the Adelaide Cup and there is a legitimate case to be made for several of these quality stayers.

King Of Leogrance appears to have gone to another level this time and will take plenty of beating in the Adelaide Cup. The Camelot gelding hit the line with intent to finish second over 1800m at Caulfield when first-up from a spell before recording an impressive win in the Listed Roy Higgins at Flemington last time out. Getting out to two miles at this point of his prep looks ideal and with even luck, I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish.

The other runner that has caught my eye in the Adelaide Cup field is Heart Of Grace, who is available at odds of $16 at publish. The Heart’s Cry mare won at the ‘Bool three back and has placed at her last two, including the Group 3 Lord Reims here at Morphettville last time out. Two miles won’t be an issue for her, and she could prove big overs at that quote – happy to have a saver on her.

Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) – 4:55pm AEDT
No. 7 Free Of Debt

This is an enormous drop in class for Free Of Debt and he won’t be offered a better opportunity to win in black type company. The Chris Bieg-trained colt ran third in last year’s Blue Diamond and resumed this time for second behind Super Seth in the Neds Manfred Stakes. He wasn’t able to get into the race when finishing at the tail of the field in the Neds Oakleigh Plate, but his form lines are superior to anything else in this race and I am happy to be with him.

G.H. Mumm Handicap (1050m) - 5:35pm AEDT
No. 3 Li'l Kontra

Li’l Kontra has also accepted into the last at Flemington on Super Saturday but at publish, she remains a chance of running here and if she does, could very well give these rivals wind burn. The Krupt filly found form around some excellent horses last time in, running second to Anaheed in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire and fourth in the Coolmore most notably, and a repeat of either of these performances would simply see her too good for these rivals.

Should Li’l Kontra not run in this race, I’ll be backing Shamino.
