UFC Fight Night 165: Edgar vs Korean Zombie – Tips & Preview

The UFC heads to South Korea this Saturday night for what promises to be an entertaining UFC Fight Night 165 card. The main event sees local hope Chan “The Korean Zombie” Sung Jung take on veteran Featherweight Frankie Edgar. Volkan Oezdemir and Aleks Rakic also do battle in the co-main, both of whom are in the title discussion at Light Heavyweight. We’ll preview each of these fights here, providing our best bets in the process.

Frankie Edgar vs Chan Sung Jung, Featherweight, Main Event
Korean Zombie $1.55

Frankie Edgar: The veteran American enters this bout with a solid 22-7-1 career record. He is 17-7-1 since joining the UFC, previously holding the Lightweight Championship. He earned a title shot at Featherweight for his consistent hard work, but was defeated by Max Holloway last time out. Known for his elite cardio, the majority of his wins have come via decision thus far.

Chan Sung Jung: The hometown favourite enters this clash with an impressive 15-5 record to his name. He is 4-2 since joining the UFC, including a first-round finish of Renato Moicano last time out. Known primarily for his exciting fight style (hence the nickname), he has 8 submissions and 5 wins by knockout thus far.

Prediction: Korean Zombie to Win

At this point, I think the Korean Zombie is the better and more technically gifted of these two fighters. He is much more versatile than Edgar at this point, especially if he can get him to the ground. He also has the power to actually get a KO here, while Edgar would probably have to settle for a win on points. His unpredictability and finishing versatility should see him over the line at very reasonable odds.

Volkan Oezdemir vs Aleks Rakic, Light Heavyweight, Co-Main
Rakic to Win

Volkan Oezdemir: The Swiss veteran enters this one with a solid 16-4 career record. He is 4-3 since joining the UFC, including 3 defeats in his past 4 fights. 12 of his 16 wins have come via knockout, including an impressive 2nd round KO over Latifi that earned him Performance of the Night last time out.

Aleks Rakic: The big Austrian has been making waves in the MMA community of late, entering this clash with a 12-1 career record. He is 4-0 since his UFC arrival, including impressive consecutive first-round knockouts. Another Light Heavyweight known for his impressive striking ability, 9 of his 12 wins have come by way of knockout.

Prediction: Rakic to Win

While he’s a relative newcomer to the UFC scene, I think it’s only a matter of time before we see Rakic get a title shot. He has the size and power advantage over Oezdemir here, which should prove valuable in a striking battle. He also has underrated ability on the ground for a big man, should the fight end up there. I like the versatility to his game and think he has several ways to win over a 3-round battle.
