2019 Pakenham Cup Day Tips & Preview

Feature racing in Victoria heads to Pakenham for Cup day this Saturday.

There is nine races on the card and plenty of opportunities to fill up the account balance.

We’ve run through every race and offered our thoughts and tips below.

Race 1: Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m) 12:55pm
#1 Lucifer's Reward & #2 Star Surprise

I’m happy to take on the favourite in the opening event. Lucifer’s Reward was very impressive over the 1000m at Sandown when he was eased up to win by over two lengths. He has not been far away in open and Listed level after that.

Star Surprise put two very nice wins together before being beaten by Bivouac at Group 3 company. He can run a nice race fresh here as well.

Race 2: Benchmark 70 Handicap (1600m) 1:130pm
#5 Battlecamp

Battlecamp was very good first up at Sandown and he meets a few of these better at the weights. He has a tricky gate to overcome however he backable at each way odds. Will only improve off this effort and with the extra distance.

Race 3: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) 2:05pm
#1 Jentico

This is quite a rise in weight for Jentico however the lightly raced Written Tycoon mare’s form is hard to ignore. She was very good when beaten just 1.5 lengths in Group 3 company at Sandown last time out and her form in Adelaide prior was terrific. She’s the one to beat.

Race 4: Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000m) 2:40pm
#4 Rockarral

Rockarral worked to the line well first up at The Valley and he should improve from that run into this. This is still short of his preferred distance however he usually takes sharp improvement second up and he has drawn to get a lovely run in transit. Small each way play recommended.

Race 5: Hanson Handicap (1600m) 3:20pm
#1 Odeon

Odeon was impressive with his first up fifth behind Teleplay at Sandown. He was beaten under a length that day and he does generally get better the further he gets in his prep. He has the 60kg to carry however he finds a very winnable race here.

Race 6: David Bourke Memorial Handicap (1200m) 4:00pm
#8 Easy Beast

This is a really tough race to assess but I have landed on Easy Beast who is low down in the weights and has drawn perfectly in barrier two. If he can replicate his run two back at Morphettville, he will go very close to winning this race.

Race 7: Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) 4:40pm
#7 Savvy Oak

I thought Savvy Oak represented good value when compared to the favourite Secret Blaze. The Savabeel gelding comfortably beat home Secret Blaze when the two met in the South Australian Derby back in May and both have recently won a benchmark 90 race over 2000m. They will carry the same weight except Savvy Oak has drawn much better and has the added benefit of having a run over 2400m leading in so should be fitter. The smart play is with him.

Race 8: VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m) 5:20pm
#4 Yulong January

Yulong January has managed to win four races from 10 career starts and his last start win at Ballarat was impossible to miss. He steamed clear in the closing stages to win by three lengths and he looks perfectly placed to move into open class company yet again.

Race 9: Benchmark 78 (1000m) 5:55pm
#6 Our Gladiator

Our Gladiator came out and won by four lengths first up at Moe and she looks like she is in for a nice prep. This is certainly a step up in grade however the chestnut mare looks well placed.
