Neditorial: cats want judd deal not dud deal for tim kelly

BRACE yourselves for nine more days of non-stop talk, speculation and rumours about Tim Kelly doing a deal to leave Geelong for West Coast.

That’s what’s ahead for footy fans as the trade period milks out everything it possibly can to avoid us talking about other sports (hence it is the leading story in today’s headlines).

Everyone knows that Tim Kelly wants to leave the Cats in order to go back to Perth, but only West Coast – he ain’t having a bar of Freo.

We all know that Kelly has his reasons for wanting to go back home, but it seems both Kelly and Geelong are making this drag on and as difficult as possible which is a great result for us, as it generates clicks.

Geelong thinks Kelly is worth more than two first-round draft picks meaning it could be similar to how Chris Judd ended up at Carlton 12 years ago.

Herald Sun journo John Ralph explained how on FOX Footy’s Trading Day program yesterday So here’s the precedent, Chris Judd, pick 5, which is Josh Kennedy and then pick 3, of course, which became Chris Masten, pick 20 which became Tony Notte, who never really made anything of himself,”

“So this is probably the biggest trade since then.

“A lot of free agents, a lot of stars move clubs but a lot of them for two first-rounders and a second-rounder back.

“This bloke’s 25, second in the MVP, 24 Brownlow votes but Juddy had only played six years, was a premiership captain, was only 24.

“He’s not quite Juddy status.”

Tim Kelly is a great player and a deal will be done but is Geelong dragging this on for another two weeks when both clubs will get what they want really worth it?

Like a bandage, rip it off and just be done with it.

give the refs a break

This time last year, the world hated Nick “The Honey Badger” Cummins for during the girls on The Bachelor.

A year later it seems NRL referee Ben Cummins feels like enemy number one as the fall out from the controversial “Six again” call in the NRL Grand Final comes out in the washup from Sunday night.

The Professional Rugby League Match Officials (PRLMO) has come into bat for Cummins as fans are still up in arms about the call in the last 10 minutes which turned the game in the Roosters favour in a statement released yesterday

“He (Ben Cummins) was appointed the lead referee because he was deemed to be the best referee,”

“Absolutely nothing has changed. He’s still the best referee.

“It’s about educating everybody, the media, general public and players from grassroots all the way through to the NRL we must uphold a level of respect for our referees and match officials.

“They’re just like you and me, they’re blood and bone. They can, and will, suffer. We just need to be respectful of that, especially their families. There’s real suffering in human lives when the heat of the moment takes over. We have thick skin, but it cuts.

“That’s why we need to continue to chip away at the respect factor. That greater recognition and respect still does not exist.”

a-league starts this weekend

The A-League still exists.

The first game kicks off with Adelaide United taking on Sydney FC on Friday night.

Despite the belief that the competition has faded away, the Neds blog can confirm that the competition is happening.

Fox Sports will broadcast games and one a week on the ABC.

West Sydney Wanderers will play at their new stadium and it’s also the first season for Western United, who will play their first match in Wellington on Sunday.

Tell your friends that Australia’s domestic football competition still exists.
